Remy
After over five years, over 800,000 score entries, over 3,500 user registrations, three (maybe four?) servers, over 1,000 items sold on Play-Asia, and nearly 200,000 forum posts - it's closing time.

Today, May 3rd, begins a phased shut down of the VJA/PNN network, to completed by June 6th of this year.

There is a laundry list of reasons as to why this decision has been made - some are mundane, others are personal. There are four that matter the most:

- In terms of coding talent, the three programmers/designers (myself, Rura, and liggum) who have primarily developed both sites over the last 5 years have no time/energy to continue to maintain them, let alone finish the things we started.
- In terms of the forums, we are out of moderation staff who have the energy to wrangle what is best described as an energetic community. Back in 2004/2005, the forum could have survived without constant moderation, but it cannot now.
- Traffic analysis for vjarmy.com revealed something I hadn't banked on: the focus on the site has shifted away from primarily being a score site to primarily being a forum.
- The fate of CS Bemani titles seems a bit up in the air at the moment, with the confusion surrounding the Empress CS "announcement" and the fact that we haven't seen a PNM CS title since mid 2007.

This shutdown will close VJ Army (both versions), Pop'n Navy, and the forums. (Due to the uniqueness of the content and the value to the community at large, RemyWiki will remain in operation.)

I realize that this plan is a deathblow to a community that has flourished for the last five years. There is never a good time to close a service like this one; I know you all wouldn't be coming to the site if it didn't mean something to you. I apologize for any difficulty or pain this may cause.

Throughout the shutdown, I will be striving to make as much data exportable as possible. Your scores will be exportable into an XML file, the song database(s) will be published in a variety of formats, and so on. Anything that's worth exporting, will be. Also rest assured that I am not selling off the site or handing everyone's email addresses to spammers. Upon closure of the site, the user database will be deleted.

Below is the basic schedule of shutdown events for the site; I realize that my track record with shutdown policies has been poor (at best), but I intend to stick to these as closely as possible.

Sunday, May 3rd:
- Registration will be disabled on both sites as well as the forum. DONE

Saturday, May 9th:
- VJA 4 will be disabled completely. Users will be redirected to the 3.0 version.

Saturday, May 16th:
- An email will be sent notifying users on both sites of this shutdown announcement.

Tuesday, May 19th:
- Private export scripts will be made available on VJA.

Saturday, May 23rd:
- Private export scripts will be made available on PNN.

Saturday, May 30th:
- New data entry will be disabled on VJA and PNN.

Friday, June 5th:
- Login into PNN/VJA will be disabled. Public exports will still be available.

Saturday, June 6th:
- Forums will be shut down.
- Signature files will be replaced (format and content to be determined).
- Public exports will remain available.

December 31, 2009:
- Public exports will be removed from both sites.
- Signature files will be removed.

(As always, the schedule may change due to external factors.)

There is an extremely long list of people I want to thank for their support, time, and energy over the years - in the interest of time, I instead want to thank everyone who was ever a part of this community. It's been a great five years, and I wouldn't have traded it for anything.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in this thread. Alternately, you can always send me an email (remy@vjarmy.com).

Thanks for everything you have done for the IIDX / Pop'n Music community Remy. It's a shame to see the site go.
chotto kiitena
Well, this sucks.

Will you be releasing the source code? I realise and understand if you're getting tired of running this site yourself, but I'm sure there are enough of us that we can come up with some kind of replacement. There's no reason for this to be the deathblow to the VJA community when we can just create and move to another forum, after all.

Man, I never got to put up all those Pop'n Adventure scores I took pictures of in Japan sad.gif

Yeah, pretty much this.

I know some sort of source code exists (that original VJA single-user score tracking script), but it's certainly a far cry from what we've got today.
grayfox9996
Wow. This certainly wasn't what I was expecting/looking forward to to finish off the weekend. I was just thinking earlier today how crazy it is that I've been coming to this site for nearly 5 years...I honestly visit it more than any other site - I always have a tab (or, before I did tabbed browsing, a window) open.

I can understand your decision, but I'm definitely going to be sad to see it go. It's been fun while it's lasted, at least.

Thanks for running the site for all these years.
KevinDDR
Anyway I'll be selling my IIDX equipment now.

2 US KOCS - $20 each
1 heavily modded JKOC - $40
IIDX 8th, 10th, and HS - make an offer!
DanAdamKOF
I may mostly lurk these days, but I visit about twice a week, and lately I've been adding scores again (thanks Taren's tool).

What a shame, but if you really can't keep up with it, it's not like we could just ask you to.
chotto kiitena
Remy would you be able to stop by IRC for a bit?

(note to others: I can't join aim chats, at work)
Blue Rain
aww
where will i keep track of my scores now sad.gif

hopefully a new scoretracker will comeup

anyway i understand the decision, its been a good ride

As far as the only fun (ha! ha!) parts of this forum go: http://vjarmy.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6492

IIDX discussion can go to zenius or somewhere, they have Xepher2010 and TimerRabbit even!

Seriously, if someone wants to release the source code, at least for the score tracking, Im absolutely up for doing whatever I can to help keep things going.

Funny, I already have a webserver and domain ready to go. What a coincidence.

Seriously though. I'm ready.

Yeah as I've said, I'm more than willing to contribute whatever work and/or money is necessary to keep this site/community alive.

Im in for helping with whatever coding/updates need to be done. I spend way too much time on VJA as it is, I'd love to help work on it.

Seriously?

Wow, what a beating, this place is still easily my favorite website (even though I don't really play IIDX much), and I've met some great people over the years on here that I can easily call my good friends now.

Thank you for all your hard work Remy and you too RMZ. While I am extremely upset at this announcement (which is probably going to be another reason I stop playing IIDX), I can understand what is happening and I thank you for everything.

I remember how excited I was to stumble upon this place four years ago (almost five I think), and I wish everyone the best of luck.

Fuck, where am I supposed to post now?

Edit: As of last month I have been a member of these boards for four years! Crazy...

At the replacement forum when it's set up btns.gif
Schala
fine if you really want people to move to Escaprism then you (Xythar) would have to recreate the IIDX subforums :colbert:

I'm only doing the Fun/Free Style part!

j/k let's go to zenius since TimerRabbit is there
chotto kiitena
I think the full forums might be a bit more than Escaprism can handle - I'm going to try and work out some kind of dedicated server effort but it's more of a question as to how much stuff can be directly migrated over and how much we need to start from scratch for. In short, it's gonna cost money.
Schala
that's why unimportant things (IIDX/pop'n discussion) should not be on Escaprism!
chotto kiitena
Well, use it for now but if we're going to set up a properly funded full replacement then we might as well just include those forums there as well, right?
Schala
yeah but that can't be done overnight

and next Mafia game is going to start "soon" btns.gif

So we've still got like 2 months or so right btns.gif

But yeah, do what you have to do. Just be prepared that you might want to move again if we get some new forums set up.

Same here. I was pretty shocked when Twan mentioned it to me over MSN. Sure I don't play much in the line of IIDX anymore, but for better or worse, these forums -- and everyone that posts -- has been a part of the daily internet routine. Thanks for the five great years it's been.

You, me, Kenchan, and Xythar; let's get this shit rolling. Anyone else willing, let's get it together so we can get a migration together as VJA goes down, so we don't have a long downtime in between, if possible.
chotto kiitena
Basically possibilities that I'm seeing are:

* We somehow 'splinter' off the /iidx, /popn (or whatever it's actually called) and /forum directories and databases to another server, or another account on the same server. I don't know if this is even possible or not but it would be the best solution if so provided that Remy, rura and liggum are okay with it (since it would also involve transferring all the source code, user data, etc). There would probably need to be compromises made, but we'll have to hear back from them first.

* We start a new forum from scratch on another site, doing what we can to duplicate the feel and functionality of this one. Not perfect since we'd have to start again, but better than just closing down forever. VJA/PNN themselves would essentially be up in the air based on whether we can get the source code or not, not to mention we'd have to come up with a way of importing everyone's XML data back into the new database.

Either way, we will need to work out what kind of hosting we're going to need based on the projected load, how much it's going to cost, and how we're going to arrange to pay for it.
over there
I don't even know what to say sad.gif If there's something I can do to help form a new site I'd be willing to do it, though keep in mind I know nothing about servers or coding or anything technical :/

I love this score tracker site and I hope it does live on.
Even if it doesn't, it will always be a meaningful part of my Bemani life.

Thanks the founders of the site for their blood, sweat, tears and whatever bodily fluids lost in the making of this wonderful place.

Sad news. Understandable, but sad news.

Remy (and all), thanks for your time and effort over the years.
Axem Rangers
That's too bad.

I'd just hand over all the score tracker data to someone else, if they wanted it, but I guess it's not my site.

edit: oh okay now I've read the thread and this is happening I guess? way cool.

I, too, would love to pitch in on the replacement. My main concern is that my relational database skills are a bit rusty because I now work with heirarchical DBs for a living and I'm not sure how to optimize relational DBs for performance, which I know became a big concern here as the site grew large. But I did write a score tracker for BS 6.0 at some point, even though I don't think it ever went live.

Without a score tracker, I'd just lose about 75% of my motivation to play IIDX, especially at higher levels.

Thanks to Remy and everyone for five years of awesome and Beating_a_Dead_Horse.gif.

Without this site I would most likely have quit playing the game back in 2004 right after moving back from Japan. It has kept the game fun and fresh for me for several years, has been there during good times and bad, and like many others I have emerged with at least a few new friends. Thank you so much for keeping this site going for as long as you have.

And while this is certainly sad news, I am heartened by all the fervor shown by this site's constituents to the creation of a replacement site, which just goes to show how much this site means to people.

Shouldn't be an issue, I work with relational databases as part of my job and it sounds like Taren has that about wrapped up anyway.

Hey, let's not turn this topic into that. I think it'd be much better if people put their energy into thinking about solutions rather than pointing fingers.
