Grandia is a fantastic JRPG but the voice acting is LOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Still worth playing if you never have, though.

Judging by the fact that you earlier said "I'm glad Square-Enix doesn't listen to us players because they probably know better than we do" and are now evidently judging Bethesda RPGs on the length of their main questlines kind of makes me want to make some kind of :plaeskool: smiley

I'd pickle 'em in brine.

Sega sabotaging a potentially successful game? Impossible!

I was honestly looking forward to that part. As gross as host-clubs are, it seemed like it would be a fun diversion from the main game. Wish I had bought that $10 new copy of Yakuza 2...
djplaeskool
Length has always been a point of contention between myself and RPGs, I think it's because I'm such an avid MMO player now. I guess I just expect things to take time.
Nothing against the recent spate of open-world-ish RPGs from a presentation or quality standpoint. If anything, Fallout 3, Oblivion, ME 1 and 2, Dragon Age, etc...all are stellar games in their own right, but I'm a very point to point player. Once I'm done with a game's primary story, I usually have very little motivation to continue. If that only takes of handful of hours, then disappointment tends to set into me.
Admittedly, that Assassination "Brotherhood" (or whatever they were called) sidequests in Oblivion were pretty freakin' awesome, but I want main stories to last longer.

I don't want to be able to restore the kingdom at level 5.
I don't want to be able to save the universe in 8 hours.

As far as SE and whatnot, I rub a lot of people the wrong way with this opinion among FFXI circles.
Too much outside input can be a detriment during development cycles, so I'll let them make the games, then decide what might warrant adjustment, balance, or alteration.

And yes, 7.5 years of FFXI have probably given me SESS (Square Enix Stockholm Syndrome)

With that out of the way, my own icon would be awesome.
"This game doesn't have an antiquated or flawed design, you're not playing the game the way the devs intended :plaeskool:"

I really hated the host clubs in Yakuza 2. They were really boring. Yakuza 3's are apparently scaled back and even more boring than Yakuza 2's so I probably wouldn't have ever done anything with them anyway. Cutting stuff out sucks though.

Oh that's gonna be fun. Ryuji was like the first time I actually died on my first playthrough anyhow
I'm only at rank 50 on Bitter before I got distracted by other games

And I guess Cave Story is coming to WiiWare (finally) March 22. If I would've known that all it took for that game to finally be released was for me to DL and beat the PC version, I would've done that sooner.

Nintendo wins summer time. Monster Hunter Tri with free online, Mario Galaxy 2, Sin & Punishment 2, Picross 3D AND Metroid all within April-July? Good lord.

I expect some delays Nintendo!
grayfox9996
I was hoping I'd catch a break, and they'd at least push Metroid back to August (like around the time frame for Prime Trilogy and Prime 3), especially since almost nothing comes out around that time. But NO. Now I have 3 games (Picross 3D, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Metroid: Other M) I need to get in May and June, and that's not counting all of the games I wanted to get between now and May.

Too many good games coming out sad.gif

Crap I want to buy every one of those. I've been up in the air about Tri because I never did get into the latest PSP version as much as I thought I would (spoilers: it got eclipsed by the next Phantasy Star game as soon as it came out), but Tri is offering free online, Wii voice support, and for $10 extra you get the game and that new Classic Pro controller. Not to mention that the graphics look really nice in Tri.

yeah Ryuji took me like an hour, Matt Helms took me like an hour, and New Destroyman took me like a half hour but I never died, it's just, that's how long he takes.

Sin & Punishment 2 in June ya'll.

"The only options were censored Yakuza 3 or no Yakuza 3 at all!"

Seriously weird, I wonder if there was some kind of legal/classification issue behind it. It baffles me otherwise that they'd release a game set in Japan starring Japanese characters with Japanese lives who speak Japanese (with subtitles) but then decide one specific aspect of it was somehow too Japanese.
rmz
I'm not sure it's a matter of it being "too Japanese" as it is that Sega was concerned that (as someone mentioned in the comments) some idiot parents would confuse it with prostitution, and the nature of what the bars are really all about is completely unexplained as it's assumed that the player is Japanese and already knows about the concept.

I think removing it is stupid, too, and if GTA4 contains far worse things, I don't really get why Sega is freaking out about this stuff.

Should I just import it? Is the game understandable with only an intermediate understanding of Japanese?
chotto kiitena
Yeah, it's not like there isn't already a ridiculously popular and very well known game series that prominently features prostitutes or anything btns.gif

I heard there was a translation FAQ that translates everything in the game if you want to import it.
Schlagwerk
Holy crap either RubyEclipse really, really, really loves working for Sega or he is some kinda masochist. First he's a whipping boy GM for PSU who gets to deliver the bad news to the players all the time, and now that the PSU PS2/PC servers are shutting down, he jumps right right into delivering bad news about Yakuza 3!
grayfox9996
QUOTE (rmz @ Feb 24 2010, 04:38 PM) *
is completely unexplained

you know what's really unexplained? why your bear/beaver truck driver has such long teeth

But yeah, basically, if you want Yakuza 4 to ever come out in the US, get the US version of Yakuza 3. If you don't care about that (and would likely import Yakuza 4, anyway), then there's no reason to get the US version, especially considering it's twice the price of the imported version.

Given that the second GTA4 expansion contains on-screen penis I'm pretty sure nothing Yakuza contains could possibly even come close.

Actually that was the first expansion, The Lost and Damned. Somebody told me Ballad of Gay Tony had something like that, too, but I still haven't played it. Still don't really understand why the GTA guys just have to push the envelope wherever they can, though - it's not like it adds anything to the game.

Is he still swamped with important SEGA WORK, or was he just involved with PSU which is as good as gone anyway? Bah, I don't expect you to know. I could ask him myself, but trying to talk to him on AIM is a waiting game that I'm in no mood for.

So I bought that Sega racing game. My brother was supposed to get it as a birthday present, but that didn't work out so I took the plunge. I couldn't not support a game where both Ryo and the Bonanza Bros. are playable.

I like it. And the computer is way easier than in the demo. On advanced anyway. Haven't played Expert. Motorcycle guys seem broken.

My reading of the Yakuza thing was: "We don't have enough time to localize several parts of the game because we need to meet our suicidal Final Fantasy XIII week release date."

Which yeah, I wouldn't want to have to do PR for.
Eggman of the Strata
I think that they're just being pushed by corporate to beat out the end of the fiscal second quarter. Which is really dumb.

No real loss gameplay-wise though. The hostess stuff was probably the weakest part of 2 and it was apparently scaled back in 3 anyway.

Hey guys, Heavy Rain is really fucking good and you should buy it.

While the game sometimes tends more towards giving you the illusion of choice than actual choice (there is plenty of that too, but not as much as it was hyped up to have) I honestly don't care because the story, atmosphere and cinematography are just so incredible. The pacing is compelling enough that the only reason I stop playing after I start is either "shit, it's 3am and I need to get up in the morning" or "this is fucked up, I need to take a break". The first playthrough is a pretty amazing experience, although definitely not one for the faint hearted.

Yeah, I sat down to play through Heavy Rain, played up through the opening stuff and went and did other things. Started playing again at 9pm and didn't stop until I had it finished at 5:30am. I couldn't stop. It was really really good. Even better than I thought it'd be.

When you say that, do you mean like silent hill-wise or saw-wise type stuff? Lots of fucked up shit or just gore and violence?
chotto kiitena
Neither, it's just really tense and emotionally harrowing. If you're playing through without do-overs (which you should), the mortality of your characters (and not knowing what the consequences of your decisions will be) adds that much more tension to the game.
Eggman of the Strata
There's at least one part that's pretty gruesome.

The making-of featurettes are really cool too.

You guys are not the first ones to say that exact same thing so I pretty much have to buy it now.

I'll get Heavy Rain eventually, but I have no money right now. I need to come up with $45 in a week for Yakuza 3, thanks to wasting $50 on Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing; except that it wasn't a waste and it's such a shame that no one cares about it since it's better than that crap Mario Kart Wii that sells 6 trillion copies a day.
