I accidentally subscribed to EGM right before they went under, and they were only reviewing like 6 games a month. It was pitiful.
Tropical Pallete
I remember in the mid to late 90's EGM being pretty cool. I didn't like the magazine's overhaul in Jul 1999, though, and I was sad when they went down from four reviewers to three. Still not as tragic as Game Players, I guess.

I have to agree. What's the point of spoiler tagging NMH2 boss names when it's not like any of them are a surprise (ie- existing character or character introduced anywhere in the game before you fight them). Hell you don't even learn their names most of the time until after you've killed them!

Maybe this suggests for full effect you're not meant to go into the fight knowing what their name is??

I spoiler things, deal with it emot-colbert.gif

My favorite thing about this thread is the lol google chrome

You know, I never actually worked out where that joke came from. I just kind of went with it.
chotto kiitena
Went back to NMH2 and finally managed to beat the last boss because I got lucky and he used cheap shit slightly less often than before.

Ending was pretty crap and felt like a bit of an insult after I'd spent like 3 hours in total trying to beat the last boss to get to it. Whatever.

In the end I'd give the game around a 7/10. It's not a bad game, but I was pretty much constantly reminded throughout of how much more enjoyable the first one was. For all the complaints that the first game felt unfinished, the second somehow managed to feel even more so in basically every way.
Eggman of the Strata
Haha.

I've got Bioshock 2 showing up today. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint!

Yeah all the unfinished leftover crap on the disc doesn't help things either

Haven't heard of this before. Elaborate?
Eggman of the Strata
The only thing I know of is that the original script had a fight against Shinobu at the end, which wouldn't really work anyway. I have no idea how anyone could think the game feels unfinished otherwise.
Schlagwerk
Yeah, didn't feel unfinished to me. Just very, very averagely blah.

The only thing that really struck me as odd is why was the scorpion collection mini-game the only one that wasn't done retro?
Oh and I guess that random asian guy Shinobu met at Bishop's grave. Wtf was up with him?
chotto kiitena
Takashi Miike cameo.

I'd provide a list but I already learnt my lesson from last time
Eggman of the Strata
Good.

Bioshock 2 is pretty cool so far, but the enemies seem a lot more aggressive so you don't really have a whole lot of time to use trap rivets or hack stuff since the hacking is all real-time now.

I should probably add in for situations like these
rmz
Bioshock 2 looks pretty good but seriously WTB more System Shock games instead. Irrational needs to get the IP rights back from EA somehow.
chotto kiitena
I bought Bioshock 2 but I'm not really sure why. I guess I was kind of hoping they'd do more with it than just make Bioshock again.
rmz
In any case, though, a mediocre -Shock game is still better than 90% of the other games I would play this year.
chotto kiitena
MediocreShock

In which you play as a PS3 owner who has just bought White Knight Chronicles due to the early hype without reading any of the reviews.

Yeah, not very hyped for the story, especially from what I've heard, but the game overall will be better than a lot of others I've played recently, at least.

Still making my way through Mass Effect. I need to stop reading every single damn thing that pops up ever, but it's so addicting to just read all of that stuff.

Seconding that latter one 'cause I highlighted it thinking it was google chrome text and then DAMN popped up.

To hell with reviews.
I'm thoroughly enjoying White Knight Chronicles.
Of course, this is coming for a guy who loved Phantasy Star Universe, and whose favorite movies last year include The International...
TJB
Finished DMC4 last night.

I was having so much fun with Dante, makes me go back to Nero ughhhhhh I liked being overpowered. I really enjoyed it though so I guess I'll definitely pick up DMC1 and DMC3 in the near future, not sure about 1 since the PAL version doesn't have 60hz.

Now I can start Bayonetta.
chotto kiitena
I have both of those if you want to borrow them

Ah thanks for the offer, I might take you up on it but it won't be for a while.

I have a lot of stuff that I want to finish before uni starts >:
annoying bitch
I heard the baten kaitos games are terrible confirm/deny

oh and super paper mario

how are them starfox assault/adventure things anyway

and FF4 after years
Eggman of the Strata
Massive deny. Baten Kaitos 1 and 2 are both really fun and by the Chrono Cross team. Turn off the voice acting and you're good to go. They get really hard, especially 2. Goddamn Holoholo Bird.

I'm apparently the only that likes Super Paper Mario though. Never played any Star Fox after 64.

FF4 After Years is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. It's just more FF4. I like it, although you have to buy each individual chapter separately. But your items carry between them. I got most of it for free when Pepsi did their free Rock Band songs because telling them you wanted a song for the Wii meant they just gave you a code for 200 points.

there are video games you haven't played?
chotto kiitena
The Baten Kaitos series is really good, I even reviewed the first game

both have great storylines with inventive unexpected plot twists, and fun gameplay (although BK1's gameplay is better than BK2's by a long shot)

I should finish BK2 sometime, I got up to the final boss and was like "fuck this" then never got around to finishing it
Eggman of the Strata
I pretty much never played anything on the Xbox and really didn't play all that much on the GameCube.

Also yeah, 2's battle system becomes too stuck on getting the Apotheosis chain set up. I liked actually making hands of cards for extra damage.
chotto kiitena
I never even got any of that stuff sorted out properly which is probably why the game was so goddamn hard. By the time I got to the end I just couldn't be bothered redoing my entire deck to beat the final boss and quit, maybe I should just youtube the ending or something.

Not worth it. I bought it and the Rydia chapter when it first came out and haven't even beaten all of the base game because it was so blah and boring.
Mazrim
Star Fox Assault (whatever the game cube one is at least) has a really excellent soundtrack. I didn't like any of the on-foot stages though.
Moogy
I never played Baten Kaitos 2 since it came out some years after the original and I lost had interest but the first one is pretty good yeah. Great music; one of Sakuraba's best soundtracks imo.

Here, have an awesome performance of The True Mirror on guitar.
deathrazor
I'm really fucking loving AC2. Assassinating people and throwing them off a ledge is probably my favorite thing to do, aside from finally being able to jump-kill people.

The twist in BK2 is quite good, I was wondering how they'd be able to live up to the first game but they did a damn good job of it. I was eating at the time and I almost choked.

Both games have excellent music. Check out "Le ali del principio" and "Iconoclasm" from the second.

edit: I'm going to go listen to the BK soundtracks now. Sakuraba is still my favourite composer.

I know, right? The damn jump kills are incredibly useful (and surprisingly simple to execute). And I love hanging from the edge and grabbing their feet before throwing them down to the their deaths. Satisfying in Uncharted 2, satisfying in AC2. biggrin.gif
Mazrim
Speaking of Uncharted 2, man the game is incredible. I have to say, the whole helicopter scene and especially being inside a building as it's collapsing was one of the most interesting action sequences you can actually play in a video game that I've seen.

Also....holy fuck the Marco Polo thing in the swimming pool. I was laughing my ass off when I got trophies during that. I love the script in this game.

Nope. I'm quite fond of Super Paper Mario, too. It's the only Paper Mario game I've cared enough to beat. I have over 60 hours into the game.

I also like to pretend that Crystal never existed.
WILD RIDE
Roseanne liked to do that too, after season 4 or so.

Also, Mazrim, good job citing parts of Uncharted 2 that were actually good. I liked the time you spent in ravaged buildings because it reminded me of Shenmue II. btns.gif
Mazrim
Well I'm currently at the point where you see the crazy block shape thing under the temple shortly after the part I mentioned, so the game is still awesome. I'll let you know if that changes (likely not).

Super Paper Mario was pretty bad. The first two are both miles ahead of it.

an incredibly important and understated thematic decision
Eggman of the Strata
I must be getting near the end of Bioshock 2 because I just got the achievement for having dealt with all of the Little Sisters, which is honestly a bad thing because it doesn't feel like the game should be ending any time soon.
Tropical Pallete
I remember I got stuck in an area in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and the game flat-out refused to tell me what to do to get out of the area (it was in the part of the game where Mario is eavesdropping on some wrestler or something). I tried no less than three times to get out, and all three times I had to reset the game because I couldn't get out. I never bothered to look it up online, so I never got further.

I enjoyed the first Paper Mario when I wasn't getting I/O Exception errors when using Lakilester. Needless to say, I never beat the game because of that crap.

what the hell, are your video game systems cursed or something?

chapter 3, no actually ALL of TTYD is the most amazing mario thing nintendo's done in years.
those games aren't hard or anything <_< if you talk to the goomba partner then they'll tell you how to solve most puzzles. it's like the hint systems in every recent metroid game, except not imposing and unwanted.
DROP
So I'm kicking myself for waiting this long to get No More Heroes. It's a shame no one else can make games like this. Of course it's not perfect, but the most noticeable flaws are pretty much blown away by everything it just does perfectly. The most glaring thing its strengths can't overshadow is how inexplicably blurry the whole town seems to be, like it was taken out of a launch game for the Dreamcast, which none of the reviews seem to mention. Not that I care too much, I guess I'm just dumb because I actually appreciate the town, it makes things more varied even if you can't really interact with anyone. And every boss scene is really kind of deep and ridiculous at the same time, in a way that makes you remember them all long after you've killed them, and all the little things like playing with your cat really add up to give it a lot of unique charm. Thank you Suda 51.
