Try doing an overhead buffered into a super/ultra on fightpad. Impossible unless you literally hold the controller in your lap and use your fingers on the buttons instead of thumbs, which defeats the purpose of a dpad all together anyways.
Eggman of the Strata
That isn't impossible at all. Also, I actually know a bunch of guys who play Tekken competitively who would bring their dualshocks into the arcade and play by pressing the buttons like it was an arcade stick. But lol Tekken.

So Muramasa showed up from GameFly and it's a lot of fun. Got my second barrier-breaking sword. It really is super obvious that the script is unfinished though. The characters talk and talk and talk but the text for it is like three words long. Seems to me Ignition might have just taken the rough draft of whatever XSeed had already done for it and just slapped it into the game without doing anything else.

This is how I typically play when given a fightstick (*and* how I played Tekken with a dualshock at the arcade)

Uhhhh I would hope nobody hits the buttons on an arcade stick with their thumbs

I know it isn't impossible but like my thumb doesn't want to hurt just to do something that takes little to no effort on a stick or ps con.

Didn't seem unfinished to me, just a very succinct localizaton. Not like there's much story to the game, anyhow..

Man, I know Japanese has a lot of things that don't have real substitutes in English, but when people talk for 20 seconds and you see less than 5 words at the bottom of the screen you know you're missing something. Especially when it happens a lot.

I liked Odin Sphere, but I was somewhat hesitant toward Muramasa. Then I heard a bunch of people say they'd improved a lot over Odin Sphere so I gave it a shot. Even though it all sounded good though, it ended up not really working for me and I lost interest after about 10 hours. The more generic experience system and simpler crafting took out a lot of what was unique in OS and I still burned out on the changed combat, it's about as mashy but with less danger =/ The story wasn't as engaging either and I know I must be the only person but I always prefer to have english voices.

At least the music is better. That wasn't enough to get me to play The Answer on P3Fes either though.

It's just really weird is all. At least the game is fun enough that I really don't care that much.

Just finished disc 2. I guess the one thing I dislike about the game is that it makes you change your party to characters you haven't used at all throughout the entire game. So I had like, three level 30 guys and three level 12 guys. Needless to say, it was irritating to play with the low level guys, so I just equipped encounter nothing during the stages with that party. Good game, I just don't like Zell or that cowboy with the dumb hat... Oh yeah, Ervine or something like that. I wish I could have four people in my party so I could have Selphie too, but Quistis and Rinoa are imperative party members. :x Squall can be a bit of a douche sometimes, but oh well, so are all the main characters in FF games. Especially Vahn in FF12. Man that guy was the biggest douche ever. So douchey that I didn't keep him in my party ever. Hahaha. I guess one more thing I dislike about it is that you can miss so many things and never get them again. Totally stinks. :< I like the story though, and the music is very disco, so that's pretty cool too. It's funny how I played this as a kid and I don't remember anything about it because I couldn't understand chicken language back then.

The whole point of Squall is that he's supposed to be a douchebag and then grow out of it by the end. Instead he becomes whiny and dependent on having other people around him
I kept Selphie the hell out of my party as often as I could. In fact, she's the only character whose limit break I can't remember. Irvine had a little more staying power because he's a cowboy, but I eventually dropped him out of the main rotation. Rinoa is a psycho hose beast so I also avoided her when I could. I guess there's some sort of social commentary about how she just throws herself unquestionably at the biggest douchebag in the story.

..so yeah, that left me with Squall, Zell, and Quistis. Broken limit breaks ahoy!

My favorite FF characters are consistently very quiet and also the least liked. Penelo, Selphie, Aeris, Rikku. I do like young Rydia and Quistis just as much though, so I'm not completely retarded by most people's standards.

Quiet as in the team gave them like a total of 100 lines or so.
rmz
Ah, okay. I was going to say, there are certainly times where Selphie talks just to hear herself talk.
Eggman of the Strata
Squall's awesome because he's totally a resolute soldier at the beginning of the game, willing to keep all of his complaints internal and just getting on with the mission. And then Seifer "dies" and he starts breaking and flipping out with "I won't let you talk about ME in the past tense!" and then eventually he fights that genocidal banking alien in the bottom of the Garden because it wants Cid to pay up and he totally can't and Squall realizes that his entire life so far has just been a lie and so he's all "fuck! I should just be a normal guy. what do normal people have? friends? I have a weirdo girl and a cowboy." and so he ends up clinging to them too much because he has absolutely no idea what he's doing in normal life.

Yeah, FF8's awesome. And so is Irvine.

Also, I actually finally finished Phantom Hourglass. I had stopped just before going to get the third pure metal and so I just plowed through the rest of the game, got the Phantom Sword and had great fun killing every phantom in the Ocean King dungeon place and beat the game hooray.
Schala
Aeris is the least liked?

I don't really like her because she's written as practically flawless and entirely unrealistic even by JRPG standards. Pretty much the idealized quiet innocent pure Japanese girl, who just does "good" until she ultimately is killed by the villain.

Yeah, but written like that it works with the fact that she has to die and cannot be resurrected in any way.
Same with Nei in Phantasy Star 2. Though in Nei's case, because RPGs were simpler back then, her perfection was shown through her stats and level growth not actual dialog and character development. I guess Alys in Phantasy Star 4, too.

Either characters' impact would've been cheapened by being able to resurrect them by the end of the game. As they are, they create an unobtainable ideal to torment/drive the main character.

Oh, I understand the whole significance in the plot, I just think she was a one-dimensional character.

Oh those never exist in anything created by the Japanese. Belldandy sends her regards.

All this talk is making me remember that I did like FFVII at one point. I just hate what it has become and how it marked a turning point in JRPGs. I guess I also had some weird takes on the story. My interpretation of Sephiroth that I got from the game was that the real Sephiroth was dead before the game even started and Cloud + party was doing battle with a restless spirit whose plan was to harm the planet enough so that he could use the chance to properly join the lifestream like a normal person, something he had been denied by the Jenova cells in him.
But no, Square had ruin it by portraying him in other media as just a flat villian who loves his mommy too much and wants to destroy the planet.

Whenever I can't quite get my head around a JRPG story I have to wonder how much of it is lost in the translation, and how much of it is just because the story makes no damn sense.

I think that FF7 is about half and half.

Eternal Darkness has one goal -- to fuck with your sanity. Obviously, this sets it apart from games such as Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts, Illusion of Gaia, and Chrono Cross.

I'd pretty much say this, but it's not really because of any element of the writing or anything, most of my favorites are just the ones who suffered along with me the most. Best example is probably the Kikuri-Hime I used for more than half of Nocturne, before she finally became useless for the last two bosses and I had to get rid of her. That was hard to take =p

Valkyrie Profile has a slightly more developed cast, and I really like most of those characters too. It's hard not to sympathize with all these people who are dead...

FF7's translation is horrible but the story doesn't make very much sense in the original either

same with FF8 (lol time compression wut)

CC's translation was actually pretty okay and they actually added some plot to the USA version but welp there ain't no fixing that

XG's translation is consistently mediocre but it gets the job done I suppose. Still though if there's any game I'd want retranslated it's XG

I have no comments on other PSX-era Square translations. Oh actually I think Vagrant Story's is really well-done, one of the better game localizations in general imo
Schlagwerk
lol no mention of FFT's translation
Eggman of the Strata
Vagrant Story is probably Square's best game in general, or at least their best game post FF6. Going back to it now is making that more apparent to me. FFT's right behind it though. Either way, I got a good feeling!

I bought NeoGeo Battle Coliseum for $10 at Toys 'r Us, because I felt like I should take advantage of their 3 for 2 sale in some way, but there wasn't really anything I wanted. (now if they had the sale this time next month I could've picked up Tekken 6, Uncharted 2, and a free.......uhhh....nope). I always thought I'd like the game, and hey, I do. I hear it's totally broken, but it's fun just for messing around at least. And the level with the Cool Cool Toon characters was really unexpected.

Balrog's hard trials are very hard but kind of useful, his last 2 are about 8 moves each but are actually pretty similar to one another. If you can do hard 4, then hard 5 has the same first half. or something similar.

C.Viper's are pretty much impossible I think.

Bison and Honda pretty much have the easiest hard trials in the game, yeah. Honda's I got nearly first try for all of them, which was nice.
