Yeah, the bonus stage is pretty difficult. I've made it to the shark miniboss and got hit too many times. I know a good trick for the rock miniboss though so hopefully I'll have more life going into that one.

Endless Mode is still incredibly fun and has great replay value. My best is still 98 screens. I average 75.

I only had enough time to play 3 rounds of the bonus stage after buying it and got just passed the shark (working on Wily Castle no-hit definitely helps with that fight). The biggest frustration is having to start the entire stage over if you make 1 silly mistake. This is Mega Man, not Super R-Type

Sooner or later I'm gonna pick up some more points so I can get Gradius II for the VC. I'll finally have enough spare points from that to get Endless Mode

EDIT: I.. um... just realized that 1/2 dmg in Mega Man 9 is not a passive item and that you have to USE it for it to take effect.. I've been playing the game this entire time w/ without it.. even when I was doing my helmet-less Wily runs! ;A;

hi5

I got mine last night and hardly got through character creation before I had to go to bed. Going to be playing that sucker tonight~

The Vault-Boy bobblehead looks pretty good on my desk at work.

I have Fallout 3 on its way to me right now but I'm not especially excited to play it for some reason. That'll probably change when I start playing it. I didn't really like Morrowind or Oblivion though...but I did like Fallout 1 and 2 of course so we'll see.

The fact that you love Star Ocean 1 but dislike Morrowind kind of mystifies me but I guess open-ended RPG's aren't for everyone.
Eggman of the Strata
I haven't really gone out of my way to go explore in Star Ocean 1. I've pretty much just gone from place to place, only going back to get party members. And really, I love SO1 because it now plays like SO2 with the skill and battle system (and the music's good too). The rest of the game's really generic and pretty straightforward. It's not especially open-ended, it's just vague on where you have to go unless you do private actions, which pretty much just say "Hey, go to the next city."

I may not have been clear; I was contrasting a linear JRPG (Star Ocean) to an open-ended Western RPG (Elder Scrolls, Fallout to an extent, or whatever else) and saying that Western-style RPGs aren't everyone's cup of tea. I do love them, though.

Although I must remember that Fallout 3 is more linear than Morrowind or Oblivion because there is an actual "ending" and the game really ends when you complete it.

Fuck yea.
Also the game is balls hard if you try playing it like an FPS and/or get to aggressive in a gun fight..
Eggman of the Strata
If it actually does have a clear ending and such, then I'll probably like it more.

I usually just get annoyed by games where I create the main character. Like in Mass Effect. I don't care about Shepherd at all. The character has pretty much zero development and a very loose back story that I got to pick but not see. I never bothered to weigh any choice of dialogue because the game never shuts out the other options if you go too far either way. I could just shoot and kill whatever and then act like a saint and it was all cool with everyone.

If Bethesda can do that better than Bioware, then I'll be very very happy.

Overall though, yes, I do just prefer RPGs with actual defined characters that develop and stories with endings.

I obviously haven't played it much yet (been at work all day so far), but I do know that there's Karma associated with good and evil actions, and certain characters won't interact with you (or will be hostile, or will send out hit squads, or whatever) if your Karma is too high or low for their liking.

From what I have seen, there is a story surrounding you (you're investigating your father's departure from the vault), but to what extent, I can't say. The reviews I've read hint that there's a "great climax" but I have no more details than that.
chotto kiitena
Yeah I really don't like open ended RPGs much. I'm having trouble getting into even Mass Effect (and I finished KOTOR back in the day) in that I just got to the point where you get your own ship and they're like "yeah go look for this scientist she's in such and such nebula" then I actually go to look there and there's like 20 planets with no indication which is the right one. That's about where I turned it off. Then I looked online and everyone else seems to like the game for this exact same reason so whatever.

Definitely hanging out for when my copy of Eternal Sonata PS3 gets here though. That'll probably be the next game I play through after Dead Space.

(and I finished KOTOR back in the day)

KOTOR is very linear too, really. If you're bussed between plot points and can never really take off on your own to go do some dungeons or quests on the other side of the world, then I don't really consider it open-ended.

Morrowind and Oblivion, for example, will say "hey, there's this main story quest over here that you can go do, and will lead you down the path of the main plotline. But hey, there's this guild here that you can join and do quests for, or you can go plunder these ruins, or go talk to this guy in this abandoned inn and he might have some quests for you, or you can go wandering anywhere you want in the world and go find quests to do, places to explore, or stuff to kill wherever you want to go. If you don't ever want to do the main story, that's fine too. It's up to you, do whatever you want."

The downside of that, of course, is that the main questlines in Morrowind and Oblivion feel somewhat inconsequential since they're only about 15% of the game's total content. I think Fallout was trying to strike a balance between leading you on a journey from point A to point B but still letting you take off and go battle those guys in that Super Duper Mart for a while and then go hang out at your house for a while if you wanted to take a break from the main story.
chotto kiitena
Yeah my objective in games is usually to just get through the main story so I can finish it and start on the next one. I have too many games and too little time to feel the need to dick around in them. So when the game makes the main story path obtuse or difficult to follow then it gets frustrating.

Hell I would never do sidequests in a game except that I tend to get OCD about completing them and also tend to worry that the game will be too hard if I don't.

Fuck yeah I blew all those raiders' heads off. But yeah I have 10 hours logged already so feel free to as me anything...
Eggman of the Strata
Well, final boss of Dead Space was kinda stupid but I like the twist.

Also, loading up your cleared file starts you over with a ton of credits and power nodes, so now I have a maxed out rig (the Military Suit, which has triple the armor of the Elite), Line Gun, Plasma Cutter and Contact Beam. And the Pulse Rifle is halfway. Having a maxed out Line Gun at the beginning is hilarious.

Whenever it drops a bit in price, I'm definitely buying the game.
deathrazor
Well, make that 12 hours. I'm at the point where the low-end enemies are such a nonissue it's ridiculous, but there are plenty of hardcore bastards out there to make my life hell. Oh well that's what I have mini nukes for.

Okay playing an evil character is totally the way to go because getting a free suite in tenpenny tower two hours into the game just for blowing up that shithole town is the best reward ever. Unless you can get it some other way, I haven't checked. Still, unlike most other RPGs where I don't like playing evil characters (Oblivion makes it too much of a hassle, and it's no fun in KOTOR to me), evil is totally the way to go in this game.

Being able to get decent weapons and armor from the get-go because you no have qualms about killing town guards execution-style is a nice benefit as well

Oh you have no idea how much fun being evil in KOTOR was with the full force persuasion and persuasion skill maxed. You could do ANYTHING. I just went around and fucked with people constantly. I actually quickloaded a few times based on the fact that I got light side points (only if it was a big enough chunk). Didn't affect too much, obviously, but doing all of the bad stuff was so worth it.

And quoting a post with spoilers is TRICKY BUSINESS to avoid said spoilers.
BLUST OF WIND
Got fallout 3 last night. Trying to play the neutral character. I spent like 3 hours dicking around a bunch and have only made it to the metro station before having to jump back to megaton to get healed.

VATS is fucking hilarious when pulled off. My best point in the game was when I punched someone in the back of the head and they went down like a ton of bricks.

Only thing that sucks is that sometimes when you drop something, you can pick it back up...I miss my chinese assault rifle =(

Only downside, the moment you realize that it was made by Bethesda Games, the fun factor of the game goes down because you realize its just like morrowind/oblivion...

Or you play the good way, put your explosives high enough at the get-go, disarm the bomb, and get the Megaton house. Oh and simply kill off whatshisface anyway.
BLUST OF WIND
probably should've done that.

Now I can't defuse the bomb since whats his name is dead. I just figured out that some enemies can only be killed via VATS...like those giant scorpions.
