I enjoyed WoW until I hit max level. Then for a year I was guilted into being Main Tank for MC, Onyxia, BWL, etc.. when I finally said screw it and left was the first time I've ever felt relieved to stop playing video game
When the first expansion came out I dusted off my main and enjoyed playing again.. it really is a well-built, fun MMO.. then I hit 70 and saw nothing had changed; It's all grinding from there. Sure they've added more ways to grind, but WoW endgame is grinding little sandbox arena, pillar-hump fests they pass off for PvP, grinding rep, or grinding progressive instances. The game focuses on gear over skill and the best gear in WoW is rewarded to those who play the most
Also I don't like Blizzard's idea that if they just keep making every class more and more overpowered that everything will work itself into a balance

I agree with most of your points. In the end, it's working with other people and learning new boss encounters until everything "clicks" perfectly that is so fun to me -- the grinding aspect is not always fun, I absolutely agree, although I've decided as I've left the game and returned 3 or 4 times now that it's while the grinding aspect is my least favorite part of the game, it's not quite enough to cancel out all of the things that I do find fun about it.

I don't really PvP at all anymore, though. I spend enough fucen hours per day in the game as it is.

I'm hoping that WAR will capture the same fun interface and gameplay as WoW, but with a proper RvR-based endgame like DAoC. Well-implemented RvR is like endgame content that creates itself, is just as group oriented as instanced end game, but focuses more on skill and learning how to play your characters rather than just pure memorization of the next bosses heavily scripted encounter
Now only time will tell if WAR will actually deliver this (and I am a little worried about balance given Mythic's history with flavor of the month classes in DAoC), but that's why I'm looking forward to it so much

..that said, WORK DAY'S OVER! Time to go home and partake in the pre-order Beta weekend!
Mazrim
Yeah, running new instances and beating bosses makes it pretty worthwhile. Plus the people I raid with are hilarious and we don't enforce raid attendance so they're okay with me running once or twice a week (Yeah, and we're not terribly far...Hydross/Lurker/VR down). Tomorrow night is the fun late night karazhan badge run, for example...no concerns, no wipes, just chatting on vent and having fun.

Leveling an alt is boring as fuck though and I can't seem to do it. Reminds me why so many dislike the game.

I played braid and didn't really like it (oh no)
edit:
I played geometry wars 2 and didn't really like it (oh no)

one time when I used to work at papa johns, I can in to work and my manager looked really depressed like somebody had died

so I asked him what was wrong
and he was like

"My friend switched WoW servers :<<<<<<<<"

and I KIND of laughed really hard because that was a good joke with a good setup

and then two seconds later I was like

:< sorry
Darighaz
War has been fantastic thus far in beta. Raiding is too grindy in WOW. there are only 3-4 hard bosses in raiding (kael vashj, brutalis, muru), besides that is mostly idiot checks.

Hmm, I get the impression you didn't play very far into braid, because the rewind concept makes for some extremely interesting and creative puzzles later on.

As for geometry wars, if you don't like the actual game mechanics/physics, then it's probably a lost cause. Personally I love that gamespace, and all the variations in enemies and modes feels like riches. The game feels endlessly novel to me.

I only played the trial for Braid but I was bored to tears...I had to force myself to continue through it. And I usually love platformers and puzzle games.

Of course, the Bionic Commando trial was pretty terrible, but once I got the actual game I fell in love, so I'm sure that'd be the same thing for Braid.

the Braid trial is pretty dull. watch a video of World 5. it should give you a better idea of how the time manipulation aspect of the game comes into play, as opposed to the "only needed if you fuck up" aspect it has on the trial version.

The trial version has world 4 though... which I thought gives you a pretty good idea.

Oh I didn't even go that far into it. I stopped at World 2 since I was so bored with the game...plus I had just picked up the trials for Geometry Wars 2 and Bionic Commando, so I was eager to jump into those.

Don't get me wrong - I know I'll enjoy the game, and I plan to pick it up in the future from what I've heard about it. But I have way too many other games right now and too little time to even play those.

Still need to finish Jet Grind Radio...maybe I'll do that right now. Three stages left, if I remember right (which I might not since it's been nearly 6 years since I've played it)!

I played it the day it came out too and the trial version was all of world 2 plus a level or two from 3 and 4.

well so far, every time i ever ask why someone doesn't like geometry wars they say its because they suck at it, which i can totally understand. Thats pretty much the reason i dont like the first geo wars.

as for braid, i dont think its possible to suck at that game unless you're a total retard. but yeah, i played through it at work at i dont think its worth more than 800 ms points, so theres no way im getting it at home. sort of ok but not as good as a lot of my friends and people in this thread make it out to be.
Jadin
oh ok that's fine
I don't know if I sucked or not honestly
I mean I beat a couple of jason's scores but I dunno if he tried

and also I mean yeah braid wasn't hard
just rewind your way through the game and you're done (I assume)

speaking of disliking things

I tried that new galaga demo

So it turns out that Turboneko applied to the guild I'm in on WoW. Small world.

The thing is, most people assume based on the first world that Braid is a platform game, but it's not. It's a puzzle game. Avoiding death is not the goal of the game. It's getting the puzzle pieces in each world. That's the interesting part. You can actually walk all the way to the end of first 5 worlds without getting any of the puzzle pieces, but you can't finish the game unless you solve the puzzles, which are pretty fucking crazy.

(I'm surprised Jason didn't explain this to you, haha)

Also yeah totally buying Galaga Legions this week.
Jadin
I understand all that and I still didn't like it because the puzzles I solved (or watched Jason solve) were pretty boring and I didn't have fun etc. etc.

that's fine. as long as you're not basing your opinion of the entire game based off of World 2, than you're entitled to your opinion.

Did anyone ever make a usable Wii gun or am I still sol?
Eggman of the Strata
I took out the garbage today and found perfectly playable copies of Tony Hawk 3, Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Theme Hospital.

Also wtf what wasn't fun about Braid? I guess if you only see games as a competitive outlet or just as things to beat it could be not to that person's liking but even then, there's always Speed Run mode. The only reason I didn't like Braid before was because I had yet to play it. For some reason it got me figuring out the order of things in Exit a lot faster too.
Mazrim
Some guy named Vaehan keeps beating my scores for songs on Audiosurf off of Denjin K, like within an hour every time. It's pretty weird, like he can't live to be dethroned. Shining Polaris remix is really fast on the game too.

That HotD is hilarious. I like what they did.

Really depends on how the game is designed. Nico Perfect Shot is the best gun adaptor and my only complaint is that the trigger is still spongy vs clicky (it's due to the B button on the Wiimote itself being spongy)
Games with a reload animation and (semi-)automatic guns are the best on the Wii. HotD 3 plays good enough and HotD 4 would probably be okay as well. The accuracy is pretty good, but the major faults are a huge delay when you take the gun off the side of the screen and bring it back (which a reload animation alleviates) and poor detection around the corners and edges of the screen.. though the latter really depends on your TV, your setup, and your positioning in relation to the TV

And I guess it's pretty obvious what I bought on the VC today. I was working my way through Bionic Commando on Hard when I saw it was 9am. I even got to play it a bit before heading into work
