I inadvertently made about 25,000 people break the NDA of that game during beta 1, hahahaha oops.
Mazrim
Well if you're going to say something like that, you better explain it!
m335h73r
beta weekend 1 had an NDA that was so restrictive, even mentioning that you were in the beta broke it.

So we enabled a detection for beta weekend 1 at work and yeah, oops.

IMO it would be more like Konami making those European 5-key KOCs again.

Somehow, every one of my irl friends playing the game ended up randomly picking that very server; many of them don't even know each other, or didn't know prior that they were picking the same server. Very weird.

So I'm sort of deciding on a game to start next. I'm burned out on Shin Megami Tensei IV, and my computer's having problems with higher-end games at the moment so I can't start a lot of stuff I got during the recent Steam sale (Dishonored etc.). I may start Fire Emblem Awakening, but I've never played an FE game before so I'm not really sure what to expect or how to approach it. I feel like I'm going to fail miserably at it, like I did when I played Dual Strike as my first Advance Wars and ended up hating it, as much as I liked the premise. Any suggestions on things I should keep in mind? Avoiding potential spoilers would be nice please :>
Eggman of the Strata
FE:A is really easy to pick up and get into. It doesn't really do anything specifically different from other strategy RPGs aside from the pair system, which you'll figure out is pretty broken pretty early on. You can even grind levels if you feel you're underpowered.
m335h73r
Beat all the dungeons except the masochist dungeon in Cloudberry Kingdom. Game is balls hard.
grayfox9996
Oh yeah I forgot I was gonna start FE:A. Whoops. I played a bunch of other stuff instead I guess.

I know it's old news now, but anybody been playing GTA V? I've been slowly making my way through the story, and have only touched Online once. Been busy with work and other real life stuff. I know Pidgey is on PS3 (which I am, because I'm tired of my 360 crapping out on me), but I'm assuming most people are on 360...?

Yo I fux with this 8bit game called Mercenary Kings on Steam it's a spiritual successor to Metal Slug I had a good 15 hours of enjoyment with it and it's around 15 bux and I think it's still in early access whatever so they're prob adding more... I recommend if you like Metal Slug with a few build-your-own-gunsy RPG elements thrown in... a solid 8/10 to be sure...

I recently dusted off my X-Box 360 and played some Guardian Heroes on it.
Eggman of the Strata
I bought a PS4. The games are okay. Nothing to write home about really.
grayfox9996
Yeah, I canceled my pre-order a while back. I'm not sure when I'll get one, at this point. Not much of anything interests me in the near future.
sync
I wouldn't really pick one up for myself at this point in time. It's a pretty cool system though and I'll probably get one in 2014 after more stuff comes out for it. As for games, Idk, Resogun and Killzone SF are a lot of fun. I really think Guerrilla did good with this one.

...I generally tend to enjoy the games I play though, so I'm a bit biased.
Eggman of the Strata
Killzone drags on quite a bit towards the end. The last few missions just have all of the dumb stuff packed into them.

Knack is incredibly weird. There's no strategy. You punch and sometimes have super moves. But enemies kill you in 1-2 hits and checkpoints are spaced pretty far apart. And enemies have way more range than you do and more speed and your dodge isn't invincible. So it's actually really hard even though it looks like a kids' game.
Mazrim
Just like the PS3, I'll probably wait for the slim PS4 to come out.
BigC
Getting consoles at launch is never a good idea...yet I keep doing it.

Honest question...aside from Mario 3D World, why would I want to buy a Wii U right now? Earthbound?
grayfox9996
Nothing else on the system is really worth it, honestly, unless you're dying to play Wind Waker in HD. The only other notable exclusives are NSMBU, ZombiU, Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101, none of which really grabbed me like I'd hoped they would. NSMBU is fun but it's still more along the same lines.

If you're still on the fence, I'm sure those $250 Deluxe Wind Waker bundle deals will continue to crop up between now and whenever Smash Bros. 4 comes out.
Eggman of the Strata
Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 are among the best games in the last few years for me (I would say W101 is Platinum's best game easily). NSMBU has some of Nintendo's best 2D level design since World and so does Luigi. Wind Waker HD is basically just a flat-out better version of an already awesome game and Mario 3D World is so far better than Galaxy 1. And then DKC Tropical Freeze is out in a couple months too.

ZombiU was pretty neat too. The survivor mode thing where you have one life is really tense.

Keeping on with the 3DS is probably the best bet if none of that interests you. Because it's a monster.

But how does it compare to 3D Land?
Eggman of the Strata
Better at everything than 3D Land.
grayfox9996
How's A Link Between Worlds? My copy's coming in the mail, either today or Monday. Probably won't get to it until late tomorrow night even if I get it today, though.
Eggman of the Strata
I haven't put much time into it but it seems pretty cool. It runs at 60fps even with 3D on and is just super smooth. They give you like a half hour of story up front and then you just get to do whichever dungeon you like with whatever items you want to rent/buy.

Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics are free on GOG for the next 37 hours. Go grab them.
Mazrim
2013 was a good gaming year for me, since I actually finished 2 Final Fantasy games...I've been playing FF games since FF "2" in the late 90s but I've never finished any of them. I finished FF9 earlier in the year (which was awesome), and I just finished FFX (which was great too). I got stuck in FFXII though, as grinding isn't terribly appealing to me. I'm probably doing it wrong. Otherwise I haven't had much to post in this thread this year because I was replaying old games I've played a ton, or speedrunning Bucky O'Hare and Mega Man X2.

I started GTA V last night and so far I've really enjoyed it!
m335h73r
So which one of you guys is FramePerfect in The Secret World?
grayfox9996
People still play that game? I always forget about MMOs, it feels like no one I know plays any of them anymore so nobody does.

Oh yeah, so who's gonna start the Smash Bros thread? Not like we really need one. I'm excited. I'll be getting the 3DS version if people wanna try the (probably terrible?) online for it.
m335h73r
One of my coworkers is a GrandMaster or whatever in the game and she was playing with that guy last night and he's all "oh you work at raptr, do you know this m33s...I don't remember guy" and mentioned music games and Mafia so I'm like, well he didn't say The Werewolf Game so bstyle is out.
Mazrim
The new Theatrhythm songlist is looking pretty strong. Looking forward to playing some Tactics music!

I'm sort of amazed that they're able to fit 200+ songs onto a 3DS cartridge. But I'm really looking forward to it; seems like it has basically everything the first game had, and a whole lot more.
Mazrim
I was thinking the same thing when I saw that they were planning to dump the entire original game's songlist + DLC into the new one. I checked on Wikipedia and the game cards can be 1 GB, 2 GB or 4 GB in size. Apparently they could also do 8 GB if they wanted to, so I suppose fitting 250 compressed songs and a couple dozen videos onto the game card shouldn't be a problem.

The PSN store is still an immense piece of trash and whoever designed it should not design anything else ever again.

Whoaaaa hi. Actually no I haven't. That game is probably the main reason why I'd get an xbone at this early stage. It looks great :/

I got the JP version of this (thank you estore for accepting foreign credit cards, probably the only good reason to own a non-US 3DS) and it is pretty sweet.

I never played the original but it sounded like a slog, having to go through that mode where you play every FF game's songs in order and then having to unlock all the difficulties one by one and then FINALLY getting the mode that actually sounded interesting?

In Curtain Call you play like 3 songs and then BOOM the game's just like "okay 200+ songs unlocked w/ all difficulties, have fun!" which is just great. After that you unlock Quest Medley which super smartly reuses the game's huge songlist to create random quests with branching paths you can then share with folks online, and whoa the online versus mode works pretty darn well too! The game incentivizes sticking around even after a loss by giving away trading cards so I haven't had anyone drop on me or anything, it's astonishing. Definitely Get Hype for that when it comes out in the US, it's real good.

hiiiiii!

I got it for 360 and there's some audio stutter going on, but it plays really well! They now include 3 challenge things in each level that increase your XP gain for the run. eg: no fault run without leaning, no fault run with 10 flips, stoppie for 45 seconds etc

Hope to be run into the ground by you soon! :>

Oh thank god. It was a huge slog on the first one to get everything. I feel compelled to unlock as much as I can before Curtain Call comes out but the incentive just isn't there. Dark Notes (2 songs randomly chosen, 1 field stage and 1 battle stage, multiple bosses available in the battle stage and it's random what reward you get for beating them) are really boring but I need them to get shards to unlock characters. 60 hours in and I still have like 6 characters to unlock and have to rely on RNG. I should be able to max out at 99,999 Rhythmia though.

Quest Medley sounds like a much better system than Dark Notes. I didn't really mind the initial Series mode grind myself as it was a good introduction to the game and got my timing down, but if I had to do the same thing again in Curtain Call I would probably be less interested.

Also, I still haven't beaten every song (including some of the DLC songs I purchased) on Stoic mode (no magic/skills equipped on the party) so there's at least something to do. FF8 boss battle theme on Ultimate is pretty damn difficult.
BG_Hojo72
If there's one change I hope they made in Curtain Call, it's making the full songs always playable on the Event Mode songs. To get high scores, you have to go Stoic Mode...but you don't get the extended section unless you have equipment and skills active. Seriously...that was fucking retarded.
