It isn't free roaming and don't ever call it that. The city is basically just a level select that you drive around in. Don't put any thought into it aside from that you'll love it.

If you aren't one of those people that sits there and goes, "OMFG TINY GLITCHES EVERYWHERE SO MANY TECHNICAL ISSUES" like reviews seem to these days, you'll find it's one of the most enjoyable games....maybe ever? I don't think I've ever laughed so hard with a game perhaps ever. Fantastic soundtrack, the voices fit everyone perfectly, character animations during cutscenes are amazing, storyline is hilarious and the action is relentless and awesome.

You know, it's really the Wii's Godhand. It's got some technical issues but looking past that, it's amazing.

It's just so... I dunno. It's like a less-serious DMC to me. I like that.

less-serious the DMC4? Actually conversation:
Friend: The cutscenes in DMC4 are hilarious! <youtube link>
Me: This better not end in Dante breaking out into song-- nevermind..

No More Heroes:
+Is well written and completely tongue-in-cheek both in referring to itself, video games, and people who play video games
+Has great voice acting 'cept for the smaller shop keeps
+Has some of the most interesting uses of the Wiimote I've seen, often laughing as I find myself having to answer my controller like a cell phone, lift dumbbells in a gym, pick up garbage off of the ground. I am also thoroughly pleased that you don't have to swing the stupid thing to attack. Putting regular attack on A was the most brilliant move in the entire game.
-Isn't a free-roaming game and is a very simplistic game with a lot of hand-holding and not much depth
-Fighting isn't as smooth as other 3D beat 'em ups like DMC or God of War

But I love the game and it will prolly be enjoyed by anyone with a good, sarcastic sense of humor.

It makes numbers going up into an art form!!!!

Like I said, I tried it briefly but liked it. The feel of the gameplay was DMCish to me, and it entertained me immensely.

As for DMC4: I have no damn idea. The only people I know with PS3s haven't been talking to me much lately, so I can't check with them, and I know nobody with the 360 version.

Nippon Ichi games are fucking number porn. Just admit it to yourself and you'll be much happier.

It's also why I can't play them anymore. I spent way too much time in the original Disgaea (a few million levels on Laharl) and can't afford to get that involved in anything again while in college.
Eggman of the Strata
I would have it if I could get to the damn store. In a few hours I guess. I already know I'll love it. The demo played exactly as I hoped it would. Just have to start on the hardest difficulty they give me from the get go.
Moogy
have you guys even seen the OP for disgaea 3

they do the fucking hare hare yukai dance

this alone ensures that it's the best game ever

EDIT: Also, stored levels max out at ~180k in Disgaea, so there's no way you could get "millions" of levels on Laharl.
Mazrim
God forbid he uses hyperbole to illustrate his point!

Also how is ripping of an anime dance a good thing?
Moogy
It's not a ripoff. It's obviously a homage/parody. They're doing some random dance and throw in a bit of Hare Hare Yukai in; I watched the OP probably 50 times or so so I started noticing it.

Haha yeah.

I could never get into the level grinding aspect though. I've never had a level 9999 character or even come close to completing a Nippon Ichi game.

I still think one of the best burns I've seen delivered on Moogy was when Moogy called non-linear RPGs (MMORPGs, more or less) "trash" and then Kefit said "Like Disgaea's postgame right" and it was like oh thnap
ParaParaKing
You don't need a level 9999 chara to clear the game though. You don't even need level 80 to clear Disgaeea 1. dry.gif
itsgreylolol
80 sounds about right, depending on the re-incarnations, stats, weapons, etc. But I don't know, I've seen low level challenges around 30 or so.

Even if you aren't a number-whore (I am =p) the game is fun. Disgaea 2, not so much, the characters weren't nearly as interesting, and the story wasn't that good either.

Yeah that's about where I was at too.

Part of the issue I have with Nippon Ichi games is that the "sweet spot" in terms of level/stats, where your characters are an even match for the enemy (assuming no GeoSymbols) is really small, and so battles tend to be either really really easy or really really hard (and the hard ones are usually only hard because of Geo Symbols that are stacked against you, which means they're only hard until you figure out the best way to survive the first couple rounds and stabilize).

I mean, I don't mind. Geo Panels give the designers very blunt tools with which to tell the player "you should power level here" or "you're damn fucked here" but which still can be used to create fairly intricate puzzles, so the stages can still be interesting just to see what they're throwing at you next. I kinda wanna play Disgaea 2 until I can access the Dark World (I'm at Ch. 7 with middling levels...I can activate the quest now but I might not be able to survive the initial battle yet) but I agree with Grey that it's just not as engaging of a title, so it's been on the shelf for a while. I don't even own a PS3, so I'm not likely to be getting Disgaea 3 even at the US launch.

Incidentally, I had a conversation a lot like this one with a friend of mine who's put over 1000 hours combined in the various NIS games.

Dan: Check out this trailer! *link to Disgaea 3 trailer on youtube*
Me: Yeah, looks ok.
Dan: Are you kidding? It looks AMAZING
Me: Looks like just another Disgaea game.
Dan: Yeah! It's ANOTHER DISGAEA GAME!

et. al., Keeping in mind that he almost failed out of one of his classes playing Phantom Brave, forcing us to have an intervention when Disgaea 2 came out.

I've been thinking about brushing up on/improving my Japanese (which has mostly fallen out of use after college.. hentai anime/manga just doesn't cut it for practice).

Anyone know any good kanji learning (not dictionary) games for the DS? Also I figure it'd be a good way to practice/expand vocabulary.

ps - I'd at least place failing out of school due to a several thousand hour RPG slightly hire than due to an MMO. Failing out of school/life due to an MMO is just too overdone and cliche. On the other hand.. what a wuss. PSO never caused my grades to drop.

Listen, Phantom Brave is probably my favorite NIS game, but everything in that game goes way too fast for anyone to seriously spend 500 hours on the game. I mean with Disgaea at least shit takes a long time to see results. You can rape Phantom Brave in and out in under 24 hours.

Maybe not Pringer XX. Some day I'll grab the Japanese GH edition and stumble my way through to him.

Disgaea 2 gets way more crap than it ought to. It's story wasn't as good, but it was good enough (aside from how it ended...), and the improved gameplay made up for it. At the very least, it had Axel.

And maybe I read it wrong, because I just woke up, but you stopped playing Disagea 2 because you opened up the ability to go to the dark world? That makes about as much sense as...well, anything else in this thread. btns.gif

No. I want to play the game TO unlock the Dark World because I've heard it's more intriguing, but haven't because the main game is less than fascinating so far, and you kind of NEED to get through that to unlock all the DW stages anyway.

Got my 360 yesterday - some guy at my school was selling a recently sent in Elite (the entire console is brand new besides the HD) and 5 games at an awesome price, and I took him up on it. biggrin.gif

So I have Assassin's Creed, Gears of War, Lost Planet, Tenchu Z, and Halo 2 (lol random Xbox game). I've only played Assassin's Creed so far but good lord I love it. I tossed my gamertag over into rmz's contact list topic, and I'll probably be adding people later this evening (after I can actually play more, as in after I do my homework and go to class). Although I should probably actually PRACTICE some of the online-enabled games before I play online with anyone.

Reviews from recent games I've played.

Bioshock: Liked a lot, had fun playing. 9/10
Crysis: A couple parts were ok, for the most part the game is pretty boring. 6/10
Call of duty 4: Some sections were cool, game feels too scripted for the most part. Don't like the multiplayer at all. 6/10
Portal: Awesome game. Thats all that needs to be said. 9/10
Team fortress 2: Best multi player game out at the moment. Amazing art style, fun game play. 10/10
Jericho: Not enough types of enemies, game gets boring fast. 4/10
Blacksite area51: I don't know what the say about this piece of shit. Had to restart the game at least 20 times to fix the fucked up textures. Just too many bad things to list about this game. Probably the worst final boss ever. Had it not been for the Unreal 3 engine, this game would be a complete waste, at least it looked somewhat decent. 3/10
Brave story: Really good for a generic RPG. Looks amazing for a psp game. Liked it a lot. 8/10
Odin Sphere: I love how this game looks, I like the game play, good voice acting, final boss is sweet looking. Only problem is the huge slowdown that occurs in certain areas of the game. 9/10

Next games I have lined up to play: Rogue Galaxy, Resident evil umbrella chronicles, Silent Hill origins, Mario galaxy.

djplaeskool
IIRC, even the development lead for BlackSite said the game needed a lot more time in the oven.

Oh, and be prepared to be frustrated with RE:UC. It's a pretty fun game (especially multiplayer) but it's difficult and the real time events are too twitch for a person with average response time to not die on.
grayfox9996
Picked up Professor Layton and the Curious Village yesterday after my roommate was ranting and raving about it on Sunday, and it's truly a fantastic. I don't think I've been this addicted to a puzzle game since Meteos - it has a great story so far, and the puzzles are generally top notch.
Deets
I'm digging it a lot too, but would you really describe the story as "great"? The aesthetics are wonderful, I agree, but all of the plot motivation I've seen so far (4 chapters in) has consisted of some kind of adventure game cliche or "YOU GOTTA SOLVE THIS PUZZLE OR I'M NOT GIVING YOU THIS DOODAD."

Haha that's true, but it's better than the story behind most every other puzzle game ever, as in not having a story at all. I'm not sure I would have enjoyed the random collection of puzzles as much without at least the context behind some of them (like certain characters giving you specific types of puzzles that match a situation or some object that they have or something). Perhaps "great" is a bit of an overstatement, but it's enjoyable, at least. I should have at LEAST mentioned that the art & style of the game is absolutely fantastic, though, and the music is definitely nice, if a bit repetitive.

Eggman of the Strata
You mentioned that before but honestly, nothing could really change my mind. The only thing I thought I'd really dislike were the load times and even those never go over 6 seconds for me? So I don't know where people were getting 30 seconds to a minute.

I mean, it's a traditional JRPG with a nice skill system, cool rings that give bonuses with timed presses, characters that actually show emotion and a fantastic soundtrack. And it has an auction house. And a battle arena. And a ton of secret stuff. The US voices are good so far too. That's like, as good as it gets for me.

I think the only downside it has really is that the framerate drops at random times but I got used to that playing Blue Dragon so whatever.
Schlagwerk
No More Heroes has the best ending ever... even if it didn't make me cry, go write a 2 hour LJ entry, then watch the ending and cry again.

It's the first time I've ever seen a video game that had a punchline.
Saiyajin
Lost Odyssey lost me at about 18 hours. It was really good at first, and the American voice acting is leagues better than the Japanese voice acting.

However, it lost me after 18 hours. It was just getting boring. Lots of darkness, no happiness. The story was depressing, the battles were recycled to proportions like never before. Battles are recycled so that on each screen, you have two or three possible combinations of enemies. So it's like, sometimes you get an easy battle, and sometimes you're characters are dying in battle. They all give the same exp, and it's nearly impossible to gain more than one or two levels every time you get to a new, more difficult, area, because after one or two level gains, the EXP drops from almost instant level up, to 1 or 2 out of 100 EXP needed for a level up. So it's hard to defeat difficulty by leveling up. Also, the puzzles are ridiculously tedious, and have you running all around the levels multiple times, dreading every enemy encounter because it does nothing beneficial for your party.

The story. Man, it's just so bad. I did enjoy reading the bits of unlocked past that are written really really archaeically, but they are a very challenging read for the most part, so I find myself just skipping over them 99% of the time. The characters are really hard to like, especially the main characters.

The loading time is HORRENDOUS. I hit 30 seconds to one minute every time I change screens, and sometimes the battle loading time is so bad I'm waiting 30 seconds to a minute for a battle to start as well. Maybe that's because I have an old version of the 360 instead of the Elite. :/ Regardless, for me, loading times alone are almost enough to put me off playing the game, as if all of the other numerous negative aspects weren't enough. I've made it halfway or nearly done with disc 2... and I just don't want to play anymore. At least with Blue Dragon I made it to the beginning of Disc 3. Man, both of those games were total bummers for me. JRPGs are changing too much for my taste. Give me an old Final Fantasy 4-7 style game again, I beg you.
Eggman of the Strata
Man, you can basically take everything you just said and reverse it completely.

I love that the soft level cap means I can't just overpower things. I could still gain SP for skills (and the skill that came with preordering is excellent and you probably shouldn't have anything like it early on), but even then, I'll still be fighting hardcore.

Like I said though, loading times for me seem to be minimal. Battles are instant but, like Blue Dragon, they take a few seconds to show off the battlefield but really because the encounter rate seems so low, it never bugs me. I think the longest load time I've had was the first opening cinema. Maybe 10 seconds there.
Moogy
