Those of you who live on these forums or on the score sites themselves probably noticed that I fell off the face of the earth for much of the last 6 months.

There's a much longer post coming on my blog about the why, but for the record, I am back. The project that was sucking away all of my time has had a stake rammed through the heart.

Now, with that out of the way...

I've noticed that our IRC channel is, well, not doing so hot. And it's understandable - IRC is painful for people who haven't done it before, painful for those that have (Sakurina, I'm looking at you), and just generally not so great for what I want out of chat: an easy to use, float in/float out sort of medium.

Luckily, science has a solution. So, we're testing a new chat room using Lingr (you can tell it's Web 2.0 because there's no e in the name!):

http://www.lingr.com/room/vja

Very straightforward, with some nice touches you can see if you scroll back through the archives from the testing we did today. If you register for an account, you can install the Radar client and get notifications on your desktop when chat happens, even if you're not in the room.

My eventual goal is to integrate the chat within the sites - or at the very least, link to it from the toolbars to make it easy to jump in and jump out.

Let me know what you think.

Haha, and ironically, I haven't been kicked off the IRC network for the past 24 hours. This is absolutely great. The Radar client works damn well (although this notifier looks more lightweight) and it looks great as well.

Though, this needs a mobile version with less AJAX so I can use it on the DS browser.

As much as I can appreciate moving the channel to an easier-to-access, more user-friendly environment, I don't think "Lingr" is the solution. Cutpasting my thoughts:

# oh lord
# a web IRC room
# I can think of 10 horrible things and 0 good things about this
# :<
# not to mention uh RIDICULOUS OVERHEAD
# This thing is just slowing my entire system down when I leave it open
# IRC is infinitely more lightweight if I leave it running
# it just feels like adopting a trendy service for the sake of being trendy
# I'd be fine with moving to a new IRC server
# but this thing is blargh
# I'm getting pauses while I just TYPE MESSAGES
# this is ridiculous
# It's not that I have a bad computer
# it's that I like to do more things than just run this
# I have tons of other stuff going on in the background and that makes it so you can't idle here
# which, let's face it, is pretty much the lifeblood of the activity in any chatroom
# it's like all the poor performance of a hosted app with none of the benefits
# how tiny is this service anyway
# VJA is one of the "hot rooms" with 8 people
# It's one of those "hey we're cool and trendy and socialist, look at our AJAX site and our cool web trendiness, would you like a web 2.0 mochaccino"
# with apparently about 30 users online
# I mean it's "chatrooms for the people" for god's sake
# What chat services AREN'T tongue.gif
# oh, fully 50% of the main page is a tag cloud
# classic web 2.0

IRC interface or bust, this web thing is killing me. I'm getting laggy spikes while typing stuff in, which is pretty intolerable for something that demands to be run in AJAXey goodness.

rmz, what exactly are you doing?? o_O I'm at work right now, and I have multiple programs using over 300MB of memory, yet the lingr page runs smooth as hell for me. No lag entering text, no lag having it appear on the screen whatsoever.

And since it's all new and stuff it's not blocked at work happy.gif

I don't use IRC because it's a hassle for me honestly. I'm already using MSN and AIM so it never seems to grab my attention, and it's pretty ugly. I would find it easier personally to have this open as a tab in Firefox over opening IRC.

So this doesn't let me type in my name in Opera, and I hate FF because it doesn't work with the important half of the internet (transparent pages ohmy.gif:o:O). I'm also not opening up that old behemoth IE just to join a chat. For now, I'm sticking with IRC. At least until this tournament thing is over.

Is there one of these that lets you connect to a regular IRC channel? Seems like that'd be the best idea, then people can use either IRC or the web interface, whichever works for them.

That was a pretty awesome rant of rmz's, tho.

There is, actually. CGI:IRC. I've installed a copy on sblorgh.org, and I use it from school regularly. I think Remy wants to integrate it into the site somehow though, so it isn't really suitable.

On my Linux machine with Firefox, I get massive lag. On my Windows machine (also with Firefox), oddly enough, it works more or less fine. Still doesn't make up for the fact that I have to keep a web browser open 24/7 if I want to idle in there though.

As far as I know, the notifier they made for it (Lingr Radar) keeps your name in the chatters list except in gray, until you log into the site chat.

Right, but I thought the notifier just lets you know if "something" was said in the channel? I like being able to keep IRC open on an alternate desktop so I can check in a few times an hour to see what sort of stuff is being talked about but if the notifier doesn't let you view "what" is being said then I don't think it'll really help me much.

It pops up the latest messages in chat in your upper-right corner on OSX, and I assume lower-right/wherever your taskbar is on Windows.

Right, but is there any way to view a complete log without opening a web browser? All of these things are kind of skirting the real issue I want solved. With IRC all of the activity is there for me to read at any time I want, without having to open some clunky web interface. If it just pops up notifications but keeps no log (and doesn't allow me to type anything), then it's kind of useless to me.

Heh, I know what you mean. I also prefer IRC to this, and I'd somehow prefer switching servers to using this. I always have IRC open for various other channels I'm in and this AJAX interface whores a lot of resources when I don't necessarily have many. The only problem with IRC as is now is that gamesurge likes G-lining about 90% of the IP addresses in my ISP's possession. :/

As I've said in chat before, if the main factors for moving to this is my lack of access to IRC, if the community objects to it in any way, feel free to keep it on gamesurge. I won't really mind much. tongue.gif

I started work on my Lingr client tonight, and it's going well so far so I might not even care about the web interface in a short while.

Anyhow, I support the move in full but the web interface was the only thing that bugged me.

EDIT: hoo baby creating a session, authenticating, joining a room, and getting room/occupant info is already done. As much as I dislike their web interface I really like the APIs they implemented because it makes this really easy.

Perhaps I'll have a workable client soon (>'.')> (^'.')^ <('.'<) (>'.')>

https://sourceforge.net/projects/jlingr/

I'll hopefully have source up by the end of the week if anybody cares enough to use it. It's a Java SWT project so I imagine you need Eclipse to compile it.
