He said that he wanted Street Fighter IV to be more accessible, but now only the most hardcore gamers still play it. He's hoping that the Gem System will help make Street Fighter x Tekken "more inviting" for casual gamers. He then described the Gem System as "Street Fighter meets Magic the Gathering," something that confused the crowd, at least until he showed-off exactly what he meant.

Ono and Killian gave the crowd an example by both playing as Ryu. One had Gems equipped, the other did not. The Gem-equipped Ryu had three Attack-type Gems equipped that would give his strikes more power as they activated. For 10% more power, Ryu would first need to get hit with two special moves. For another 10% boost, Ryu would then need to be hit with five normal attacks. And finally, for a huge 20% boost (for 40% in total), Ryu would have to execute a special attack successfully on his opponent. By doing all of this, it was clear that the Gem-equipped Ryu was doing an obscene amount of damage.

So learning what a bunch of attribute modifiers do in a match would make a game more accessible? oh my no

Magic the Gathering is a scary ass, complicated game you have to play a lot before you can even feel comfortable.

oh also apparently there's already a huge backlash against this game on SRK

to the point where they had to make a sticky thread just for complaining because it was derailing everything else

also: DLC gems!

I dunno man, it feels like the game went from "closest return to mechanics people enjoyed about pre-SFIV fight mans" to "holy mother of god" in the span of like 3 weeks. At E3 it was a (ugly) footsies-heavy game without comeback mechanics or other cruft. Now it looks like a bloated monster that probably won't even be tournament-playable without people making up their own rules. What did you think inherently sucked about it -- mechanically, anyway -- prior to the game going full retard?

universal chain combos are horrible for traditional sf. there's a reason almost no tournaments ever happened for sf alpha 1

basically it hurts the footsie game a lot when you can just chain medium -> heavy and have no reason to use the heavy attacks on their own. not to mention all the easy hit-confirm combos resulting from chains, which inevitably turns into the main focus of the game. this is even worse in sfxt than in SFA1 since everyone has chain into tag launcher and can do at least decent damage with no meter

then there was the fact that the developers clearly don't "get" tekken at all. one of the things that really scared me off this game was when someone asked seth what the essence of tekken was and he said "i think it's getting in and going for those 50/50 mixups". i don't play tekken and even i know that's some scrub shit - if anything tekken is more about the movement and the wakeup game, both of which are probably the most complex of any fg

this just had "B-game" written all over it from the start, kinda like tvc

Is the 'b' in this case for 'balanced'. Because yeah, TvC was pretty balanced. The highlight of EVO 2010 for sure.

ok none of yall except BBH probably remember this, but the old SRK meme they used whenever ppl bought up guilty gear was "it's just mindless rushdown". and it's returned over the years for melty blood, arcana heart, etc.

well, tvc is basically the game everybody thought those other games were. not only does it have the absolute worst implementation of combo breakers i have ever seen, and not only is baroque yet another dumb comeback mechanic, but there is virtually no good anti-air to speak of in that game.

in airdash-based fighters, you need high-priority one-button anti airs that can lead to full combos. since tvc doesn't really have them, the whole game becomes about the 2 players trying to airdash on top of the other to get their offense going. marn is supposed to be the best in that game, but if you watch him and the rest of evo top 8 the only things he does better are execution and picking god-tier team.

tl;dr tvc was horrible and capcom never really intended for it to be a flagship game, hence the wii-only release.
