i do like a good ranma-fest

As soon as I buy the last few seasons of Ranma, I plan to undertake a nigh-suicidal marathon: every episode of Ranma in a row, then the OVAs, then the (eeeeeew) films.

So if I suddenly die, assume Takahashi's opus did me in.

Just popping in to point out that anyone in this thread who has not yet seen "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" needs to go and do so at their earliest convenience. It's barely worthwhile to talk about anime until you have that one down.

Maison Ikkoku, right?

Seriously, Ranma 1/2 was not her best work. It was her most popular in the States, sure, but I lost all interest when I started realizing that a good chunk of the fanbase are like tranny wannabes or something.

All of her stuff is pretty shallow and repetitive and not great, but her style of rewriting the same situations over and over for a series, and thinly disguising them as something new, works better in Ranma than it did in anything else she's done.

Wow, good call Putf8um, I thought I was the only one who knew Quadra had a song in Erueka 7. He did quite a bit of beatmania stuff under other names, such as soft landing on the body and g.m.d too.

Erm...wasn't that DJ Simon?

Heard the anime wasn't as good as the game... then again, I haven't seen all the series yet.

Apparently Shiki isn't as emo in the Tsukihime game.

And yeah, I Soft Landing on the Body's DJ Simon.

I only meant opus in terms of sheer scale... although to be honest, I think Yatsura came close to matching Ranma in sheer footage as an anime. (It had MUCH better movies, I know that much.)

Oh yes: fuck Haruhi Suzumiya. Seriously. Yes, I've watched it (given it my usual "two episodes to hook me then fuck you"), and WHAT THE HELL IS SUPPOSED TO BE ENTERTAINING ABOUT THAT SHOW.

Everything. And you most definitely need to watch more than 2 episodes of it to understand it. It's far more than just a comedy show.

Kyon. Seriously. Most entertaining and realistic male anime character ever. I died laughing when he made the hidden Mikuru folder, and then got caught a few episodes down the road.

Yes yes, dj KYON IS the best isn't he? So hilarious in every situation.

Every character in the show is fantastic. The references (oh god the mysterious island episode), the music, the disjointed episode setup. It's all done fantastically.

My god, someone finally ANSWERED that question. (You'll have to forgive me, I have a relatively low tolerance for morons, so the fact that I usually get a response of "OMG NOOB IT IS TEH AWESOME" just makes me angry when I think of people gushing about it.)

I'll give it a shot in a week or two, I need to catch up on Kiba and PPGZ now that my connection seems stable again.

Forgot you had your name changed to that for the longest time.

Fletcher: It's a good series if you give it a chance. I've seen alot of anime in my time, and this was one of the more original shows I've seen in a long time. KyoAni need to animate the other novels that are out.

Not a lot happens in the first two episodes (episode 3 is where it gets interesting, although I'd suggest watching the first 5 for a good idea) although to be honest I still thought they were pretty funny.

My brother watched the first 9 in a row yesterday and he doesn't even usually watch anime.

I found the first episode downright outlandish. Which is funny, because when I read that a.f.k. was going to be doing the series, I read the synopsis, I didn't think it was all that interesting. By the time episode 4 came out, I broke down and watched the first three in a row. Totally hooked, and got my friend hooked on it as well.

And Kenichi Ogata as the cat. Absolutely PRICELESS.

The first episode initially aired on April Fool's Day, so don't take it too seriously. It's meant to a joke. And also episode 8 (the second island mystery episode) aired 2 days before Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's birthday. Coincidence?

Stuff like this is what makes me love the series. Well, besides all the other things it does so perfectly. I'm kind of worried that now if I go to watch any other show it won't be as good as Haruhi and I'll be disappointed.

edit: okay I'm an idiot turns out the first episode aired April 2 and the eighth on May 21, not 20. Whatever close enough.

Go watch Higurash, Mushi-shi, or Monster. I've been watching these series as of late, and they're quality stuff. If I get some time between calls, I'll write up a few bits on each series. They aren't as spastic as Haruhi, but they're good watches.

I've been watching too much anime in the last few months. =D

From what I can tell of the manga (which is supposedly closer to the source than the anime), no, Shiki isn't emo at all. Badass would be a better term.

*first post in thread*

I like how every Gundam you posted was from G-Unit (aka Last Outpost). Come on, there's better series than that. Ah well, I guess I'm just bitter because you didn't include the Hydra. tongue.gif

Btw, Oni, you spoiled Cowboy Bebop for me, thank you very much. Ass. mad.gif *has not seen it in its entirety*

But yeah, my anime likes include giant robots (Gundam, Big O...uh...ends about there. Never really liked EVA, and haven't checked out others. I like Voltron!), Hajime no Ippo (I doubt anything else could top this for my favorite anime series ever...maybe a few OVAs, but never a single series, despite it being unfinished), Cromartie (sometimes random is fun), Trigun (just an all-around good series - good blend of comedy, drama, and action with an enjoyable story), and a few other random things.

I really don't like anime that much, but the little that I like, a tend to like a lot. Like...Beck had its moments, but it tended to annoy me. Samurai Champloo was great from what I saw of a fansub, but it felt a little empty and unsatisfactory at the end. Gungrave was pretty much straight action after a certain point...if it had spread the story out a little better, it may have held my interest longer. FLCL was just random, Excel Saga was hit-or-miss...the list goes on for a while.
