I'm new to pop'n (I got pop'n 6 today), and I don't have a pop'n controller of any kind. I had planned to play with my IIDX controller, but I ran into the problem of trying to change the button configuration in the game to sort of match the IIDX controller. I spent two hours trying to figure it out and didn't have any luck.

Now, I know it can be done, since I've seen scores on 9-line and other 9-button modes on PNN where the popper(s) used IIDX controllers. How exactly do you configure the buttons? What changes do I need to make to the default configuration so an IIDX controller will work?

Sorry, I didn't see that you answered me in IRC earlier.

Based on my USB adapter:

----IIDX --- Pop'n --- Dual Shock 2
01 -------- Button 1 - Triangle
02 Key 5 - Button 2 - Square
03 Key 3 - Button 4 - X
04 Key 1 - Button 6 - Circle
05 Key 6 - Button 9 - L2
06 -------- Button 7 - R2 Beating_a_Dead_Horse.gif
07 Key 2 - Button 5 - L1
08 Key 4 - Button 3 - R1
09 Select
10 Start
13 Scratch Up - Button 8 - Up
14 -------------------------- Right
15 Scratch Down ---------- Down
16 Key 7 ------------------- Left

It depends on which key you want to map to which button. If you want the 2 key to be the center red button (button 5), you'd map the red button to L1 (with a Dual Shock, to make it easier), since that corresponds to the 2 key, and so on. You can figure it out from the chart.
One note: Scratch Up and Scratch Down may be switched; I don't know if spinning the turntable counterclockwise is considered up or down.

In Pop'n 10 (probably other games, as well), one of the preset configurations sets up a IIDX controller perfectly for 5 key. I suppose 9 key can be done as well (with scratch up and scratch down acting as two different buttons). Good luck. tongue.gif

On 6, you can play 7 line mode. The only thing about it is that it turns the leftmost and rightmost white off, meaning you have 4 top buttons and 3 bottom buttons. So for it to make sense you have to turn the IIDX controller upside down tongue.gif

In newer versions, I think you can play training mode and simply turn off say the leftmost two rows, meaning you can keep your controller how it is.

Playing 9 line with the scratch on two rows really doesn't work very well because it becomes hard to impossible to hit several notes of the same kind in a row (since you need to scratch in the same direction for all of them) and it's just a damn hard thing to do anyway. I wouldn't try it unless you're really desperate.

I'll probably just play 5- and 7-line modes until I can afford to get a controller or be able to borrow one from a friend.

Oh dear lord, playing with the PS controller is instant death, or at least I can't synchopate that many parts of my hand. But yeah, it's damn well near impossible to play 9-Line with a iidx, though 5-Line is definitely doable. I ended up playing with my old 5-Key controller for a while until I scrounged up enough cash to buy parts...

Yeah, I've decided to stick to 5-line on a Dual Shock for now until I can afford a pop'n controller.

5-line on dualshock is SOOOO boring. i can 100k almost every song which in fact does get boring, but you gotta learn how to do 5line then work that up to 9line. or you can do what i did and whore linus 9line about 100 times until you finally pass laugh.gif

Just a IIDX Lovin' Hokie :)
Don't know what a Hokie is?
Shame on you:)

From game faqs:
Some of the more difficult tracks end up looking like pulsating SCAN-TRONs on crack.
an orgy of descending minuses.
