The pop'n blog posted actual screenshots of the song select screen and HS preview: http://mp.i-revo.jp/user.php/popn-music/entry/304.html

That HS preview feature is really cool, almost makes up for the crazy new ratings system they're trying to implement.

I like that they did away with banners and brought in the character art, but that's a lot of open space. Which I assume is just for this beginner mode, since they still have to put things like poptomo(rival) score rankings on the song select screen.

well, in fantasia, the scores like personal best and stuff you could have on the song select screen or you could leave it blank by hitting a yellow twice iirc. I dunno about the rival scores though (esp since we don't have them yet in pw)

on the screen2 in particular, the open space is just BLARING. open space is nice when done clean, but not really executed well here. for some reason, I look at screen1 and there's not that much open space actually... but something is just not working too well imo.

SO I DECIDED TO TAKE A MOMENT AND DO THIS

screen1 vs

vs

http://www.highwaygames.com/db_images/screen_thumb_6297

(omg do you know how hard it is to find a picture of the song select screen??? I found like every style of every other bemani game's song select...)

as you can see, the 18 background had a bit more going on it; it wasn't a solid colored like background but actually like the background you'd see in pictures with shit there but done in a way that wouldn't take away from the front layers. particularly what it could use is a nice gradient or something. and if the theme is like a park or an amusement park or something, they could easily make a sky with STUFF on the ground. it'd be like 12509238520958x better. and it might work with pulling in character art in better than a plain background.

I'm expecting this to be all very basic artistic critique that hopefully konami will remedy very quickly. it honestly might be them being too lazy/pushing out loc test before the UI was finished. at least, we can hope.

Outside of the ratings changes, I like the new menu a lot. I recently played Fantasia, and it was totally overwhelming. At some point the number of songs outgrew the interface, and this looks like a step in the right direction towards alleviating some of those issues. I actually like the open space. It's clean, but it still looks like pop'n. Yep.

No doubt pop'n needed an interface overhaul. It is kind of barren but it's a much needed change.

pop'n Sunny Park will have Event Booster; use PASELI points to speed up unlocks.

It was only a matter of time.

it sounds like they took the ideas from MMO cash shops really (pay x amount and get an exp boost! or some really broken equipment!).. at least in this form of gaming, it doesn't give a player a super huge competitive edge..

Yeah, and the "grind" so to speak is self-fulfilling. Unless it requires playing level 20 songs or something. I did pay an additional 30 paseli per credit to unlock Broken in the first Lincle Link though. :|

So it's either pay to play the game in order to unlock stuff, or pay to unlock the stuff directly. Unless the quick-unlock price is disproportionately expensive compared to how many credits it'd take to get the songs the "real" way, I don't see any issue with the idea.

Me neither, since there have always been shitty, lengthy unlock processes in bemani. The problem is when they start making the game severely crippled for non-paying users like free MMOs.

What I don't see happening though is people rushing to pay for quicker unlocks. Heavy users will play lots no matter what, light users aren't going to pay up extra to unlock faster, and that leaves people with too much money, too much time, who really want to play all the songs. Which I think is a small group of users.

What I do see happening is people paying for cooler features in-game, like IIDX's premium free. Milk the heavy users for all they're worth, while satisfying them at the same time.

Don't think so.

If ongaq's involvement with the wac album is any indication, ongaq's responsible for strings in a wac track or something.

yeah, I saw that and found it kinda odd. I figured taq doing sound or something for pop'n was a bit too hopeful, but then... if he listed everything he did a song for, I'd think there'd be more bemani mentions?

e.g. he only has FEVER listed..
