Good thing there are PS2 -> PS3 adaptors... If IIDX goes triple, I'm definitely sold on the system even if though it's big enough to crush me to death in my sleep.

Yeah

Every time a new IIDX or Pop'n game comes out, people speculate "oh this one is themed with X so it'll have a lot of songs from Y" but they generally have at most 3-5 songs following the theme (if that) and the rest of the selection is indistinguishable from the other games in terms of 'theme'

I dunno - Iroha, FEVER!, and THE MOVIE had a lot more than a few songs based on the overall theme of the game. I expect at least 10 or so very Japanese-esque songs in this one.

Iroha has Biwa-Gitari, Goemon, Hyper Japanesque, Koto Fusion, Nebuta I guess? Onsen Rap, Ninja Heroine, and probably some others. The CS version actually adds more that are tied to the theme pretty well, with Enka, Enka Remix, Shamisen Brothers, Pretty Miyabi and some others. Some of those are pretty loosely tied but they're still tied to various traditional Japanese things. Like Ninjas.

sets bean? or did that come out on another mix

The Movie's thematic songs are so loosely tied to the theme anyway, which is probably for the best. The Gojira song or whatever comes to mind.

Sets Bean is on Iroha but I have no idea what it's about so I didn't include it.

Either way, I'm pretty sure Iroha does the best job of representing its own theme. Carnival does pretty well for itself though too.

Weirdly, there are more songs on Iroha that represent holidays than there are that represent traditional Japanese stuff. Set's Bean is one of these (setsubun) along with stuff like Tanabata, Oh-Misoka, Sotsugyou, Xmas Presents, Hinamatsuri, Halloween, Kei Row Punk, Hyper Rock'n'Roll (April Fools) not to mention J-Jazz (Valentine's Day?) if you count that. I don't really get why unless holidays somehow fit into the "Iroha" theme but it's worth noting also that all of the above are unlockables.

are any of those even about holidays celebrated outside of japan?

Well Sotsugyou is "graduation" that's fairly universal I think

the others are Japan exclusive holidays, but I would think they were put in because they're holidays in Japan leading to a theme more of "holidays" than "traditional Japanese stuff"

Oh-Misoka is basically New Year's Eve
