Productivity week continues!

Our MediaWiki install has been upgrade to 1.10.1. I haven't had much of a chance to actually tweak anything yet, but relief is in site with regards to our lovely spambot problem.

If you run into any problems - the upgrade was a bit manual - please let me know in this thread.

Very excellent. Since this version of MW supports noinclude, I should now be able to do stub-sorting (so we can have stub categories for artists, IIDX topics, and PNM topics), and I can streamline the process of deleting spammer pages by creating a template that will place all such pages in a deletion category. That way all the sysops have to do is check the category and just delete all the pages that appear in it.

EDIT: I've created the template and the category, if you want to take a look at it (there's instructions on the template page):

http://vjarmy.com/wiki/index.php/Template:Delete

http://vjarmy.com/wiki/index.php/Category:Deletion_requests

This should make it much easier to find spam or garbage pages (CALF's pages come to mind...) and deal with them appropriately.

EDIT 2: Some images aren't showing up for some reason (example).

Oh, it looks like even not logged in users can edit pages. dry.gif
Recent changes by not logged in users. It's spam of course.

The install required going to a clean config file, and of course, MediaWiki is brilliantly configured to allow full anonymous editing by default.

It's been shut off.

There appears to be an issue with the uploaded images. (By that I mean, they don't show up.)

If it's anything like last time, it's a chmod job to do on the uploads folder.

ParaParaKing: That would probably be because MediaWiki still doesn't have a captcha for new signups, and besides, people have cracked captcha systems for a while now.

Would it be very harmful to contribution to just make new accounts require approval? Or to make it so that only admins can create them for people?

There was something I noticed about the spambots that I have yet to see mentioned here on the forums:

1. All the spambots (the main ones anyway) have 6-character usernames.
2. The 1st and 4th characters in said usernames are always uppercase, the rest lowercase.

That being said, would it be possible so that someone attempting to register with a name that matches these two conditions is automatically blocked from registration?

As far as I know, no MW hacks exist that would prevent users with certain names from signing up.

But it'd probably take about 10 minutes to code your own hack for it.

On the other hand, in my experience, it usually doesn't take long for the spambots/controllers to "figure out" why they can't register, and it ends up being a big game of cat and mouse.

After looking at some of the accounts, most of the spambots attacking the wiki are sleeper accounts that have been there since mid-June (before the upgrade). Just block them on sight.

The only problem, though, is that there might be about 800 of these things.

On a forum I help run, we added a simple numberstring to input - not even a captcha - when registering. 123573321 or something silly. No more spambots since then! biggrin.gif We figure it was so simple the bots weren't looking for an extra line in the phpbb code, but instead looking for images with codes and such.

I like the detection system that some top 100 comic site I vote for CHKN's Left/Right comic on. It shows one comic character with its name, and gives three radio buttons, two with random names from other comics, and one from the one shown above. Select the right one, submit, boom.

We should do that with IIDX artists' pictures, haha.

I still maintain that HotCaptcha is the way forward.
