Solid State Squad Forums _ Last Message _ Decency.

Posted by: rmz Feb 4 2009, 01:08 PM

I know that this has been going on for a while, but it's time to draw the line, as a couple recent posts have made me realize that my forgiving attitude was apparently a mistake.

If you cannot resist the urge to post personal attacks or bring off-site drama onto the board, you will be banned. I am also disabling all sockpuppet/duplicate accounts, and if I see that more are being created, they will be banned as I see them.

In general, if you can't post with even a modicum of decency, you will be given a warning and eventually banned. You are adults, so act like it. VJA has been devolving into a bit of a shitpile for a while now, and it's time to clean up the mess. If you absolutely must post something stupid, do it in Free Style. I'll also be moving threads/posts over there a little bit more as well.

Well TWG just got a whole lot less interesting. Also, I liked posting as Dr Girlfriend more than as Kraken but who am I to argue with draconian moderation policies? mellow.gif

I guarantee you that I am, even now, a hell of a lot more lenient than Remy would be.

I look forward to this, as it would nice for VJA to be like it was a couple years ago. This is a good wakeup call for everyone. There are forums elsewhere for the kind of posting some of the people here enjoy. (I'm not saying I didn't do some stupid posting myself, we're all guilty to an extent!)

Well as rmz said in the OP it's more of the personal attacks and bringing in stupidness from other forums (even just to comment on its stupidness here) that has brought this about than silly and/or off-topic posts/threads

..I don't see the harm in keeping puppet accounts around, though

yeah take it over to AIJ

they seem to welcome stupid posting

But in all seriousness I'm glad something is being done. Is the same going to apply for irc?

That one will be up to the channel ops since I don't hang out in IRC much these days.

IRC has always been way more lenient than the forums have been. Is there something more specific that needs to be addressed?

As long as no one is hurting anyone I don't give a fuuuuuck. Do what you guys think would be best for the site/forums, etc. :E

Just as a reminder for everyone, a banning from the forums has traditionally included a nuking and/or jailing of your VJA/PNN accounts.

Shitting up this thread is a really great way to prove the point rmz was making.

rmz said personal attacks and off-site drama were forbidden (which is fair enough). If you're extending that to "making any kind of joke, regardless of how inoffensive" then that's also fair enough since it's your site, but this may not be the forum for me anymore.

Seriously, did that Billy Joel reference I made offend you? I'm honestly sorry if so, I thought anyone who knew the original song (albeit not many people I guess) would just get a chuckle out of it. I wasn't aiming to piss anyone off and I apologise if I did, but like I said that's just how I am.

Well jokes offend people and stir up forum drama. Kind of like innocuous sockpuppet accounts and threads about anthropomorphised IIDX songs. They have no place on VJArmy IMO.

Because it's spam and wastes bandwidth, posts, and in some people's cases, their time.

Free Style isn't even worth clicking on anymore.

Quoted post wasted bandwidth, a decent post that could've been in its spot, and in my case, my time.

The point is that there are places where its less than appropriate to post whatever the hell you want, regardless of whether or not it has anything to do with the topic at hand. Posting random goofy stuff in a thread called "Decency" about how there needs to be a change in attitude and posting habits is less than decent. It says "Hi, I'm not taking this seriously at all. I don't give a crap that you want this place to be nicer. I'm part of the problem." The great majority of this forum its fine to post good natured jokes. The prevailing "I'm going to do whatever I want wherever I want" is more of a problem, as I see it...

waffles is pretty much spot on. Derailing a thread in the news/announcements forum about trying to make the forum better comes across as really spiteful.

Posted by: FrozenHalo Feb 6 2009, 11:28 AM

Not going to lie;

I've stopped browsing these forums for awhile now because of the direction this site has been going. It's slowly been snowballing downhill for me, and I can't say there was ever one specific reason why. I almost feel intimidated to post because all that really goes on are in jokes. And as soon as you post in a topic with an in joke going on and you have no idea whats happening, you either get flat out ignored and the conversation continues to derail, or you get for the lack of better words shit on. I don't feel like dragging this out because I'm sure most of you actually remember what the old VJ Army was like, and probably remember it for the better.

Posted by: waffles Feb 6 2009, 02:27 PM

I'm wondering what the guideline is with regards to "Theres a serious thread, and I thought of something that I find humorous, but its completely derailing and doesn't belong here. Where do I put it?"

For example, if the above post made me think of coming up with http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/7460/takeonblcoksro2.jpg. Posting it in-line would derail the thread (Common here). Posting a link to an image would be only marginally better. I'm thinking that probably the best thing to do would be to make a thread/post in freestyle, and make a link from "reasonable thread" to "random crap" thread. That way people get their lulz, but the thread stays pretty clear.

Thoughts?

This is something that shouldn't have to be done in the first place, it's a lot of effort that can be done with a simple "take it to Free Style". I also think that you're thinking too much about it now.

oh no you don't
not until you hit 10,000 posts

but also yeah if you're going to eventually ban people for posting without taking a topic seriously then it's probably best for me to be banned preemptively so I don't do something to lose my iidx score stuff :>
o wel

Posted by: waffles Feb 6 2009, 05:32 PM

If bans are going to start happening for real, there are going to have to be intermediate measures taken between "shut up" and "completely acct/IP/everything banned from all VJA/PNN offerings", like "Can't post for a day/week".

I don't know how to manage any of these things, but both RMZ and Remy are reasonable enough folks that it would take the most belligerent of idiots to get completely banned/acct nuked without being completely aware of how and why.

Posted by: Kirby Kirby Kirby Feb 6 2009, 06:11 PM

Free Style and Listen to Yourself are essentially the same forum, except one allows for discussion. I personally would like to see Free Style closed, though I suspect most of the active people around here would hate me for thinking that.

VJA a couple years ago was an awesome forum, now it's just offtopic nonsense in every thread, so I only tend to stick around whenever a new game comes out to find out what's new and then resume my life elsewhere on the Internet. It's sad, really.

Posted by: Jadin Feb 6 2009, 06:16 PM

The topic of discussion is that mocking people constantly and bringing in outside drama on VJ Army as a whole is no longer being tolerated, while the no silliness at all is specific to people posting in this thread. There needs to be a place where people can talk about this without it being derailed constantly.

Kirby Kirby Kirby didn't like Marie_Antoinette either so that pretty much sums up how ANTI-FUN he is

You people are kinda dumb if you don't see all the on-topic threads (game thread, the IIDX ones, etc.)
(and the fact that the majority of the nonsense IS in free style)

or are those for some reason "not like the classic pure of heart vjarmy of olde" because someone might post "lol pabst blue ribbon" once every 1000 posts in the IIDX AC/CS threads instead of "lol mirror force"

I honestly don't see how those few jokes were preventing people from carrying out serious discussion in the topic but if it's just "no jokes here" and not "no jokes anywhere" then I can live with it. I don't understand why it's necessary (I don't think anyone was trying to be spiteful), but I'll refrain from making non serious posts in Last Message if that's what people want.

I think a lot of you just let this stuff bother you too much though. VJA has always had injokes. If you don't understand one then just play along with it and try to find out what it was later on. That's what I do.

Posted by: Tau Feb 7 2009, 04:21 AM

VJArmy hasn't had anyone new join in years though, so the place has inveitably degenerated into a bunch of injokes. Oni and Schala's sockpuppets are part of what make this site fun to browse.

I suppose there's always Free Style. Maybe I'm really dense, but I guess I haven't seen much around here that could qualify as a personal attack.

Apparently, since I posted. My point isn't "no more fun!", it's "less of Schala/Oni's nonsense scattered all over the goddamn place". Schala's cool, but her inside jokes have grown big tentacles and now extend into just about every thread. It would be nice if 90% of nonsense stayed in Free Style or whatever.

Then again, I'm a Ruiner of Fun™.

Free Style just feels like an excuse to justify the bullshit we were putting in Listen to Yourself in the first place. That's what I thought when I first saw it, and it pretty much remains true to this day. If you just kept moving the stuff there (clarification: there = Listen to Yourself) in the first place, I suspect we wouldn't have gotten into this situation of having to get strict again, because you wouldn't have allowed the nonsense to get out of hand in the first place.

Kirby: Free Style is funny. Just because you don't find it funny doesn't mean nobody else does. Trying to force your own opinion on what is and isn't funny onto other people comes across as a little self-centred, which is probably why it's making you seem like the "bad guy". Chill out and don't read the forum if you don't like it. If you feel it's spilling out too often then talk to rmz about it but honestly most of that stuff is pretty harmless and done without malicious intent so I see no reason to be offended by it.

Posted by: Lentic Feb 7 2009, 10:04 PM

As a new user, I guess I'll just throw this out there: For IIDX discussion, I basically check VJArmy and the forums at BemaniStyle. There's occasionally some stuff I "get," but yeah, this place is riddled with incomprehensible in-jokes. Even in threads that I assume are supposed to be somewhat serious, and discussion based. I don't know the hidden meaning behind Pabst Blue Ribbon. There's just a lot of stuff where I'm like "Oh, I guess I'd find this funny if I joined four years ago."

That's not totally a problem - I guess it's pretty expected when you have a fairly small, long running community centered around a "hardcore" (yeah shoot me) topic like IIDX. Or Pop'n for some. Just know that when some of you guys are wanking all over threads like "lol pabst blue ribbon, splash beats on your mom!" it's pretty off-putting to people who haven't been here nearly as long as you.

With that said, this place IS a great resource for some good discussion - but in terms of clarity and focus, BemaniStyle has it beat.
The amount of "silliness" and "in-jokes" isn't something I think needs to change, but this forum might benefit as a whole if people were a little more conscious of when they're communicating in a totally exclusive manner.
