So, what constitutes a good chart in people's eyes anyway, because everyone always seems to say "Style X has terrible charts" but never actually commend any.

For instance, a few songs with good charts that come to mind are Drivin[a] and CROSSROAD[a] even though those are terrible songs. By contrast, Broadbanded and Narcissus are very good songs with some truly awful notecharts. I think Infinite Cave[a] is one of the very few songs which manages to have both excellent music AND an excellent chart (and the video fits very well, too).

Irrespective of whether the song itself is good or not, then, what are your favourite charts?

Hot and Dangerous scratching. Makes "Big." by FullMetal Tortoise look like something Gosaku would play.

IMO a good chart shouldn't have awkward patterns or make you contort your hands awkwardly. They should also be appropriately challenging and fun. Not sure how else I can describe what a good chart is.....

A chart I like that flows well is Come On [a]. A fun challenging chart would be Denim [a]. A bad chart would be like Snow storm [a]. I don't like Snow storm because it's scales of 16th notes with chords rammed in the middle. It feels like a poorly done Kakumei 2.0.

There is my two cents.

God I fucking hate charts like that too. I also hate charts that are a 16th stream from beginning to end with little to no changes in rhythm whatsoever (hi AA).

I enjoy charts that are varied and contain a variety of different things, like straight up eighth-rhythm parts, scales, mini-jack sections, and heavy scratching parts. Songs like that are few and far between, though. Blind Justice has all of those things except the scratching. Uh, a lot of good-cool songs are like that too, without the scales.

basically good charts are good charts because they are FUN to play
sometimes it depends on skill too, because someone starting out at iidx won't have very much fun playing aa[a] regardless of how good a chart it is

I really like snow storm's chart :>
sequence cat is fiiiiiiine too
I also really like broadbanded and narcissus
vanessa[a] is also good

bad charts are umm
red rocket rising because it just ffffffffffffff doesn't go with any lyrics
kiseki because it does that repeating 2 notes thing
beginning of life remix[a] because it's not spread out
xepher

I hate charts like G2 where there's barely any variety, just tons of doubletaps that are exhausting to keep up with and rolls that turn into an absolute holocaust on most randoms. G2 is kind of special though because it's at 170 bpm, but even if it were 130 bpm it'd still be an uninteresting chart.

Fascination Maxx like jadin said, I shouldn't have to elaborate on that. and kiseki, worst song\chart\video (unless you have an orange-haired snaggletooth gook fetish like trip machina) tripping contact remix's 4 key spam near the end is fucking horrible but the rest of the chart is fun I guess. Checking you Out because it speeds up for no reason (hiphop doesn't go at 218 bpm ever) Also I hate Macho Gang [A]. I think that's it, I like most charts in IIDX, but if I venture into Normal I'm bound to find absolutely horrible charts like Apocalypse or Blue Mirage; luckily they're not so much frustrating as they are awkward, so I can play them once for the AAA then ignore them for ALL ETERNITY biggrin.gif

this is airy.

I like Beginning of life remix's chart. I think it's because it has a variety of things; chords, jackhammers, streams, etc. But i kind of see where you come off saying you don't like it. I don't mind it though. To me it's a fun challenging type of chart.

Thus far I've found most nustyle gabber charts to be ridiculously fun (usually reserved for [H] charts, though there are some non-stupid [A] charts I enjoy, like Vanishing Point).
I've also noticed that I have a fondness for the charts for a lot of tracks categorized as 'Techno'...especially TaQ and Akira Yamaoka charts.
L.E.D. charts are usually really fun, though Laser Cruster can go to hell...

Overall MVP still goes to Jam and Marmalade [A] though. That chart is boss.

I like charts that aren't the same old generic bullshit we've seen over and over. I'm a big fan of: Concertino in Blue, Ganymede, Little Little Princess, the beginning of Kurukuru Love, Mei (fucking love this chart to death now sorry lol), Fire Fire (lol :V), Four Leaf (FUCKING FOUR LEAF 8D), Sequence Cat ... oh yeah, Denim is pretty HAT too. I'm probably forgetting a lot of stuff. OH YEAH, AND HYPER EUROBEAT ANOTHER. BEST CHART EVER SERIOUSLY. everyone go play it it rules 8)

I hate unimaginative boring shit like V the most, but IIDX is fun enough that I even enjoy playing charts I don't find fun, lol. I think Pop'n has more creative notecharts than IIDX. Also, Blind Justice is boring as fuck

I will agree with Toph about Fire Fire being an extremely enjoyable chart. I also happen to enjoy the music but maybe I'm more connecting it to how it's played rather than how it sounds (makes any sense?)

I also find charts like Inazuma and Quasar very amusing. They have this nice flow and keysound response. Charts like G2 [a] and Stoic can be very repetitive and exhausting without giving you that sensation that you get from other songs. It's that feeling you get for being a fundamental part of the song's structure and composition. To me, that's what mainly constitutes a good notechart.

Finally, I'd like to give an award for great notechart use of the TT in all of iidx to *drumroll*......Watch out!! It's truly a fantastic. -all scratch mode recommended too-

Guilt & Love [N] is fun, even on DualShock. PHOTONGENIC's [N] chart really sucks.

Boring, generic, way too dependent on a good random to get a good score. I really dislike Contract another lol

The BPM changes in FAXX are great, but the chart itself is terrible. I dislike it on a whole due to the HIT 1 EVERY BEAT FOR ABOUT 400 NOTES part. The middle, jacks, and slow parts are all really good though.

Watch Out! [a] is the best chart in IIDX singles, period.

Watch Out 14k is the best chart in IIDX doubles, too, so it's only appropriate.
