I haven't played IIDX in about three and a half years, and I'm planning to start up again.
I wonder how long it will take me to shake off the rust. Apparently I could once clear a handful of nines! They switched up the difficulties since 8th-9th right? I don't seem to remember getting passed fives back then. I wish I had kept checking this site once in a while; I'm pretty sure my old vjarmy scores are lost forever sad.gif.

Has anyone else come back after taking a long break? What was it like?

Yeah like Jadin says it'll take a few long sessions.

For reference, it took me about 6 sessions of 6-8 hours each to come back from a ~2 year break, and 3 sessions of about 4-6 hours each to come back from a half a year. It takes time but you will definitely see your skill coming back.

I came back from a 2 year hiatus last year, and it took me about 2 weeks of playing 2-3 hours a day to get anywhere near what my timing and passing ability used to be. Sounds like you were (if you really could pass some 9s) around where I was skill-wise, so maybe you'll end up with some similar results.

I havent played properly for 3 months (or moreso 12 months of me not really caring and just playing here and there going to and from uni) but in terms of the newer styles now, i personally think it's alot easier to shake of the rust as the charts are alot more user friendly (in particular, anything in the 7s-9s range). I don't exactly play that often in general these days, but just spending like an hour or two or so playing empress or gold gets me on a roll again (from mere AA's to AAAs on say easier stuff).. Thats of course, if i'm having fun.. But all in all, compared to three or so years ago, iidx is alot easier to 'de-rust' (fewer scizophrenic charts, charts tend to be more on time, easier timing, cleaner interfaces, etc) so dont feel too intimidated smile.gif

Speaking of hiatuses tho, i still think that going on breaks regularly gives me significant boosts in scores, for anything 11 and under...
I call it my 'sling-shot effect' tongue.gif

I've had no bud for over 2 weeks now, for like the first time in about a year (we 365 hyar). I passed my second 12 yesterday; I refuse to accept the findings of this scientific research.

I just played for the first time in long while (+1 year hiatus) and I'm roughly a full letter grade below on what I could do before.

When I've taken breaks in the past it usually takes a few solid play sessions to get back where I was. This usually varies depending on what particular style I get back into it with.

It doesn't really count as a hiatus, but once I played nothing but doubles for like 2 months and went back to SP only to find that I couldn't hard clear a vast number of songs that were easy peasy before I did the doubles thing.

doubles is really good for strengthening your weaker hand though (the left, in my case)
it's easier to dance around the controller and hit key 5 with my thumb or index finger

rust takes about 2 weeks of semi-dedicated play (at least once every 2-3 days) to come off, I find.

My IIDX lifestyle for the past 3-4 years has been a month or two of dedicated play followed by a 4 month period of inactivity, and it's always been this way for me.

This time might be different though LOL. DJ Toph and DJ Hentai are coming back. You guys don't even know.

I live in an apartment that has thin walls, and I am playing without sound, but it is not fun at all. What should I do?

Find some cables to convert composite audio to a headphone port and use nice (aka non-earbud) headphones while you play.
